Yes, it's news and there are a lot of Cali people here and others who drive similar roads ....

Injured California motorist trapped at bottom of 100-foot ravine is rescued after 5 days

Authorities say a motorist whose truck tumbled about 100 feet down a Southern California bluff was rescued after being trapped at the bottom of a ravine for nearly five days.

"Rescue crews responded Saturday after receiving a report of a badly damaged pickup at the base of a steep hill southeast of Bakersfield, according to the Kern County Fire Department.

A firefighter who was lowered down with a rope determined that the motorist was injured and had been trapped inside the truck since crashing last Tuesday near Stallion Springs, according to the department’s incident report."

So someone spotted the vehicle, after the driver had been stuck there for five days? Or did it take the rescuers that long to find them after the crash was reported? The story is a bit light on details. Sounds like the driver might owe their life to someone happening to glance down the ravine?

My mind drifted over to how/why he drove himself over the side to begin with. Five days of suffering from his injuries and not being able to do anything about it is more than a lifetime's worth of enduring excruciating pain. I hope his injuries are minor but falling that far makes that seem rather remote. If he had them on, this incident should make a good argument for why using seatbelts is a life or death decision to make before hitting the road.
