Looks like mandatory vacation is being forced upon some tech companies:

Guess that's better than firing a big percentage of the workforce.

it's not mandatory, instead of having people gone or off at diff parts of the summer, it causes certain production issues and planning disruptions. By having everyone off at the same time it's more practical for planning and efficiency. This is actually the norm in Europe.
