GTXP distortion

I have a game theater XP sound card and BA4800 speakers. Just recently I have started hearing distortion in the sound. I can get it to go away by going into the setup and setting all volumes (master, wave, cd, etc) to around 1/4 and then turning up the speakers to keep normal levels. I have always had the volumes in the settings maxxed before, and didn't hear this distortion. It's annoying to have to set things low, too many games automatically kick the volume back up so it's a constant playing with the sliders. Any ideas?
