GTX980 Reference cooler vs custom multi fans?

I noticed that most GTX980 available have a custom multi fan cooler instead of the reference one (well, its not just the GTX980, been around for a while, but I am looking to get a 980 now)

Are those custom fans actually any good?

Do they blow air out the case or down into it? (that could be a problem since I have my PSU at the bottom right under the GPU)

Anyone knows of a site that actually reviewed and compared those cooling solutions?

reference blows out the back of the case. multi fan will blow air inside of your case and rely on your case fans to move the air out. While the reference blower is very good for what it is, the multifan cards will be quieter and lower temp if you have the case airflow to move the air out. If not or if running multiple gpus next to each other than the reference blower is the better option.
