GTX660 in a 2.0 slot

I'm thinking of getting this: ASUS GTX660-DC2O-2GD5 GeForce GTX 660 2GB 192-Bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

However, my mobo is the Asus P6T Deluxe v2, which has a 2.0 slot.
I know 2.0 and 3.0 are compatible, however, when I first built my system about 5 years ago, I put my previous 1.0 card in the 2.0 slot and had major system responsiveness issues. It would stutter and essentially be unusable unless I booted into Safe Mode, so I ended up having to buy a 2.0 card which fixed the problem.

So where as before, I put an older card in a newer mobo, I'm just wondering what the chances are of something going wrong if I put a newer card in an older mobo.

I'm choosing an Asus GTX660 because I figure putting an Asus card in an Asus mobo will lower the chance of system instability.

What do you think?

It should be absolutely fine, I'm running an Asus 780 in an MSI board at 2.0, but I originally had to swap the board from an Asrock because the Asrock was causing stuttering with my old 9800GTX+ SLI setup. It was much better with the MSI.

It seemed to be down to bad PCIe implementation. If I tested the bandwidth in Sandra it gave me much lower system to device bandwidth in the Asrock than the MSI, despite everything being PCIe 2.0.

It's not the first time I had issues with an Asrock board, a previous board I had of theirs that supported AGP and PCIe ran fine with AGP, but when i put a PCIe card in I got stutters in games and movies.

What kind of board did you used to have?

My previous build had a Tyan K8WE and a PNY Quadro FX3400.

When I put the Quadro in the P6T, that's when I started having problems, which is why I got a GTS 250 and have been running that ever since.

I just feel like it's about time to replace the GTS 250 so I can play Bioshock Infinite, Diablo 3, and eventually Borderlands 2 at higher settings. I also imagine that my Adobe and Autodesk software will benefit as well.

Even though the GTX 660 is a better performer, I'm also considering a GTX 750 Ti since the thermal and power specs are better.

Shouldn't have any problems. I'm running an EVGA GTX760 which is a 3.0 card in an ASUS P8P67 board which is 2.0 and have experienced no problems at all.
