Really odd...

The Canadian prices are lower than US. Does anyone know why this might be?

Usually the sticker prices here are ~20% larger than in the USA. Even when our dollar was very strong I've never seen them equal, let alone less (our dollar is even below SD atm).

Edit: Perhaps the 10% discount is already applied in Canada?

This is still the cheapest card release I've ever seen up here (by comparison anyway)..

To put it in perspective, the 5970 is 499USD at .com while 635CND at .ca

The US Dollar has been tanking and newegg.ca has stiff competition from NCIX up here, so we get some decent prices.

Newegg.com is price gouging in the states. MSRP is around 499 USD, so newegg.com increased the price and added in the 10% discount to be deceptive. We still do pay more in Canada as you can see, Newegg.ca is not showing any 10% discount.

Even with the 10% the exchange rate results in the CND cards being cheaper.

It is just odd is all, MSRP of 499 would usually mean a Canadian MSRP of 550 or more. I find it hard to believe that newegg.ca is selling under MSRP.

Perchance does this mean MSRP trends will be reducing up here 😀.

Well our import tax is also different so that accounts for some of the price difference. There is a larger mark up for books though if that makes you feel any better 😛

1 USD = 1.00230 CDN.

With dollars practically at parity, there is no reason at all that a $499 US card should cost $550 in Canada. If anything the card is actually selling at 5-6% above the actual MSRP F/X adjusted price.

About time though. The USD has been worse off than it is now in the past with us still paying a good 20%+ mark up for no reason.

Canadian companies have come up various explanations for why Canadians should be paying more for similar items in Canada than US customers would in the US. Some of the reasons are larger economies of scale in US, more competition in the US which forces companies to price goods more aggressively, FX rates being set once a year (usually Jan 1st), which means that if the Cdn dollar rises during the year the prices will still remain at the older FX rate until the next re-evaluation. Of course there are also differences in the corporate tax rates, import taxes and tax incentives for corporations operating in US / Canada.

Another major reason is consumer behaviour. Porsche and Audi lowered the prices of their vehicles in Canada due to customer feedback/complaints; and customers' desire to import these same vehicles from US instead. These firms responded to remain competitive. However, on the other end of the spectrum we have customers keep buying Starbucks coffee, books/magazines in Canada at inflated prices over the US, these firms have no reason to lower prices even when the exchange rate goes to parity. After all, prices are also dictated by supply/demand and not just by the FX rate 🙂

Personally, I think consumer behaviour has a very large role in affecting prices. Canadians can just as well fly NYC/Chicago, etc. or other parts of US to purchase luxury watches, jewellery, brand name clothing and even actively import cars, or drive to Buffalo from Toronto to bring a TV (despite iirc only a 6% duty tax). If these behaviours were more predominant among the general Cdn population, then Canadian companies would be under more pressure to lower prices for these goods. However, people buying these expensive items are in the upper income bracket already and the extra savings are probably not worth their personal time.

Not being a reason has never stopped them before.

Our dollar was nearly parity (above it for a time) a while ago, we still paid far more for electronics. It is just the way it has been. Currency adjusted US prices have always been 10% lower or more (books as well).

It is nice to see them actually drop is all. First time in my life that a product has released with a currency adjusted price lower in Canada.

The prices always reflected the days when our dollar was 20% lower than yours (or 30%.. lol), things just never changed in the past couple of years when that was not the case.

If it is a sign of a trend I must say I would be very pleased.

Seems you have missed the part that I live in Canada. 😀

Zotac GTX580 for $520

vs. TigerDirect.ca

Can't really conclude that Canada has lower prices than in US by only looking at Newegg.com/ca scenario.

Russian is 100% correct.

And this is a break that we never get so all you canucks should be buying that want a 580.

This reminds me of Ati videocards there headquarters were in ontario yet we were paying more for our own local product than americans were even when the dollar was even.

It still pisses me off to this day and I swear if I ever won the lotto I would blow like a million dollars on product and undercut every single provider in canada.

And I will name my site honestprices.com lol

Yes I see you live here too, sorry.

I did not mean to conclude anything from newegg.ca. When I posted this thread ncix and canadacomputers did not have product posted.

I simply found it amazing that the 580 was put on sale at what is the lowest price relative to a sister US site I have ever seen in my life. Even during times when the dollar was stronger than it is now.

I merely was hoping it might signify a change to the brutal price difference we used to see when our dollar was also strong.

I have never bought from newegg in canada before as ncix and CC are always cheaper. I really was just floored when I saw the 580 for less than $620 on release day given the US prices I looked at first. I'm used to getting screwed I suppose, not that it was screwed 5 years ago when the price difference was relatively equal to the exchange rate..

This right here has me shocked too:

Newegg must simply be perusing aggressive prices here to steal some thunder form others.. NCIX is $50 more for that product atm.

Edit:
So it seems that the prices are not "canadian" as more local retailers put the things up.. but a very aggressive push from newegg.ca Thumbs up to that anyway...

Tigerdirect.ca is also the absolute WORST when it comes to pricing, especially on video cards. They're almost, if not, as bad as Best Buy.

You have a very good point here. This may be a similar situation to what Netflix did with the $7.99 CDN/ month launch vs. $9.99 US/month pricing. Newegg.ca probably wants to be very aggressive and undercut a lot of the already established Canadian retailers to gain mind share and loyal customer base.

Sales are low, I'm betting my head. I personally would rather buy from memexpress or ncix before newegg.ca. Not to mention shipping is twice the amount...
