Check this out:

850mhz? That would be quite the ball broiler if true. Techreport quotes are more sane clock in the 400 mhz range, placing this at roughly 40% of a true 480 and squarely in the 5770/5870 mobile performance range. Notably missing are the power consumption figures -- but no doubt these "puppies" have the power to suck your battery dry in no time flat while turning your groin into a penis panini (thank you, penny arcade).

I look forward to further ridiculing $4000 laptops with these parts once available.

Well at least it's not a rebrand. Pair this up with a mobile i7 and you'll be raping laptop batteries in no time.

Could be 425/850, since 850/1700 seems too high when desktop parts don't have those clocks.
Basically lower clocked and presumably voltage binned GTX465 chips, so it should at least compete with the HD5870M since that's just a desktop level HD5770.

Edit: so techreport does say it's 425/850, which is the same as this article, they just only put one of the clockspeeds.

People who spend that much money to game on a laptop, that you would have to have plugged in anyway, make me want to punch a baby.

Had several "gaming" laptops when flying every week between 98 and 06 or so. They had JUST enough juice to last from Denver to either coast when you subtract takeoff and approach.

But the real "killer feature" was firing up MMOs in a hotel room. So, gaming laptops do have their place. And the extra cost is easily justified when you consider alternative entertainment on the road. At least I thought so, and my first laptop weighed in at $5300.

I had a gaming laptop for awhile (Dell 9300, overclocked both the CPU and GPU, had the 3DMark06 mobile record for a bit), and while it didn't come close to desktop performance, it was awesome for college. That said, I'm surprised. It almost seems like high performance mobile technology is regressing when compared to desktop improvements, especially in terms of performance/watt (or performance/battery life minute). Anyway, penis panini made me lol, thanks for that.

I have a dell precision with the quadro equivalent of a 9800. It is very nice being able to actually game on the road.

Gaming laptops have a place, for all of those that get sent to say Iraq and Afghanistan, you gotta game on something to pass some time away and relieve stress.

It'll be interesting to see how this performs, I was looking at some of the 5870M laptops in the 1100 range. So we'll see what this does the prices too when laptops with it hit.

Techreport is saying 100w.

Nvidia has completely lost it.

That's simply not possible! With two of these, a 17" display, i7, 6g+ of RAM, optical and magnetic media plus cooling powerful enough to dump 300 watts of power we're talking a 400 watt brick here. Do those even exist? Even a single GPU would need a 300 watt power brick.

I was mostly joking about the scrotum scorching in my OP, but that... that... is amazing. This would have to be a 20+ pound laptop to get anywhere near 2 hours of battery life.

I'm sure NV engineers are proud of this abortion as well.

I wonder if that thing would make it from powering on to desktop on battery alone... D:

And lol at two hours on battery - probably with a backpack-shaped battery on your back!

my understanding that the previous record high wattage is nvidia gtx280M at a ridonkulous 70 watt... this is "only" 30watts more... but that is 80 watts too many for a viable laptop.

I never had a gaming laptop until I got to Afghanistan. Ordered an Asus G72gx online for $1000. Couldn't be happier. I'll sell it or give it away when I'm done here.

just keep it on base out of the sun and you should be fine. i had a friend in high school whose brother was in the army, doing IT management on a base in afghanistan. he said that he couldnt overclock his stuff as high as he would if he were in the states, but with some good watercooling you could still get respectable systems up and running in the sandbox, so long as you dust them regularly. i think he also had some form of air conditioning though, some of the server systems he was running couldnt have possibly ran in 130 degree weather

I'm selling my Asus W90 because of how heavy it is. Can't use it on my trips cuz it's heavy as hell so i'm buying a HP Envy with a single ATI 5850 mobile card in it.

I love to play on the go, my wife usually snaps at me during vacations... just can't help it.

DTRs like the Alienware M17x and Clevo M960U used two GTX 280M in SLI.

The Clevo power brick is 220W, which is just enough considering a high end mobile proc is usually around 35W.

A single GTX 480M with a mobile Core i7 would probably need a 120W power brick. No biggie for a gaming notebook.

the biggest shame here, is that you couldn't do optimus on it unless you pair it up with a dual core cpu...

AT headline says it has 352 SPs just like the GTX 465 but also lower clocked to save power, so my guess is even lower than GTX 465 maybe equalling GTX 260 but with more features.
