GTX480 vs GTX750Ti vs GTX760

Hi all,

I'm looking to make an upgrade to my graphics card and I am struggling to grasp the numbers. I have compared these graphics cards and their scores/specs are close in some areas and completely different in others. I suppose I am more interested in FPS and I have not been able to find a direct comparison.

I am currently running a Dell XPS 8300 with the following major specs:

Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.4GHz
nVidia GT545 1GB
16GB Corsair Vengeance (4x4GB) DDR3 Dual Channel 1600MHz @ 9-9-9-24
Dell 460W power supply

I am running 2x Dell U2312HM displays at 1920x1080 through DVI. I do have a spare monitor of the same type, but 3 screens is a bit too wide for me, so I tend to stick with just 2.

I mostly do word processing for university but also some film editing (so I upgraded from the stock 6GB RAM to 16 for that). I also do some light gaming such as Flight Simulator X and whatever is on Steam at the time. I have Skyrim, Cities XL and a few other bits, but typically they're not too bad at a lower FPS. Obviously simulators benefit quite a lot from high FPS.

I am typically getting 20-30FPS from FSX and would like to try and double that figure if I can.

I came to the conclusion that something like the GTX750Ti or GTX480 would be my best bet. The 750Ti being a lot newer and less energy intensive. The 480 providing higher "scores" but using a lot of power (and my PSU is quite low in power).

I also considered the GTX760, but wonder if there is much advantage over the 750Ti. On the nVidia website, they provide similar FPS for the same game, but the 760 is on max quality and the 750Ti is on medium.

I am only really looking to spend £100 or so. £150 would really be my maximum unless I'm getting something very special. I've had this computer for around 3 years and I don't blast graphics. I will consider upgrading completely in 3-5 years time so it's a bit of a small and economical hop that I'm after.

So really I'm looking at value for money and I don't fancy spending a lot more money for minimal gains of a few percent.

Should I just go with the 750Ti or is there a better alternative?

Many thanks

I'll give you some facts and opinions, so that you can made a better decision.

GTX 480 is too old. Also needs a lot of power. Do not buy that.

GTX 760 performance is around 50% more than that of GTX 750 Ti. They are not close in performance.

GTX 750 is not the same thing as GTX 750 Ti. "Ti" version is faster.

If you get a GTX 750 Ti, make sure to get a 2GB version. And preferably one without a PCI-E power connector (because one without PCI-E power connector should have better resale value).

Your Dell 460W power supply should be enough for a GTX 750 Ti. It may be powerful enough for a GTX 760, but it may not. Post a picture with the power supply label (or list the amperes/watts on various rails).

I have two MSI GTX 760 Gaming cards for sale. $100 plus shipping via Paypal.

If you want, send me a PM. 460 watts should be fine. Even fully overclocked, my system below did not draw much over 350 watts, and not over 530 watts in SLI. Just make sure you have a 6 + 6+2 PCI connector on your PSU. Dell's sometimes can be lame with their PSUs.

I have a 760 in a machine with an aftermarket 400w psu, so it could work, but yeah not sure about "460w Dell psu" haha.

Last time I upgraded GPU I did the PSU at the same time. Some stock 240W or something up to a 500W Corsair.

As I'm going for a budget upgrade, if I can get away with not having to upgrade anything else, that would be beneficial.

If you have cables for PCIe, then get the 950. It is allot more powerful than a 750Ti and is only marginally more expensive. In the long run, it will be worth the little bit extra up front and is right within your target price range.

Just get the low-powered version of the GTX 950. Some factory OC'd 950s are so close to the 960 in price that it's better to get the 960 instead. So take the most basic model of the 950.
