The GTX460 has GDDR5 RAM and the GTX260 has GDDR3. Will this make a substantial difference, or should I just go with the one with more ram? I play at 1920x1200, light games (LoL, CS, L4D, etc)

lol, you are always coming up with some crazy questions. the gtx460 768 is about 20% faster than a gtx260. in some games you would want more than 768mb of vram but the ones you listed are fine. plus even the gtx260 can tear through those games.

yea, i recently downgraded to a gtx295, from a 6950. then i realized it's too power consuming, loud and hot, so i need something even less hot, loud, etc. these are my two choices so far. but hypothetically speaking, the vram wont be a limitation in the GTX460 right?

I had a GTX 460 768. I should have spent the extra 20-30 dollars at the time and got the 1GB version. Don't make my mistake!

I play at 1920x1080 btw

So the GTX460 768 mb can be vram limited in some situations? well, the GTX285 is another option. 1gb seems to beat both 896mb and 768mb, unless gddr5 is magically better.

you seem to be acting like gddr5 is about the only difference here. these gpus have completely different specs though. at the gtx460 launch, gtx285 was about 10% faster overall than a gtx460 768mb but will use more power and be louder and hotter. and with newer drivers and in newer games the gtx460 768mb has probably caught up to the gtx285.

The GTX 460 768MB runs cooler and uses less power and also supports DirectX 11, although none of the games you mentioned require that.

There were some OpenGL performance issues with the new Nvidia Fermi graphics cards, especially in comparison to the ATI Radeon HD 5000 and 6000 series, but again none of the games you mentioned use OpenGL so this shouldn't be an issue.

The GTX 460 is definitely more future proof for the games you play and has a lot more going for it, despite the smaller frame buffer size.

future proof isn't really an issue, i'm only using this card as a temporary card until radeon 7000 series come out or geforce 600 series.

I've heard too many stories of people being VRAM limited in resolutions like mine.
