For $160 you should be able to find a 7850 1GB. Like this: XFX 7850 1GB $170 ($150 after rebate) + Far Cry 3. I hope these are the right dollars.

Compare vs. GTX 470 (note the power consumption and temperature)

If 7850 or 660 is too dear, then dont waste $ on obsolete crap from several generations ago. Depending on where you are, electricity prices will end up making the cost difference vs 470, while you get heaps better performance.

470 is terrible performance/per watt ...... 460 is fine ... (not great )

it's better to get GTX 660 which is pair with 580.... add some extra $$ to your budget .... it will worth it for sure ...

I don't think there will be an appreciable difference between 660 and 7850 1GB on a Phenom X4 940

Your CPU can become a bottleneck in CPU intensive games with cards like 7850, but you stated your budget so it's a good idea to try to find the best performing card for that money. Of course, if you don't need as much performance as a 7850 offers, perhaps you've overestimated how much you need to spend. It could be that the 7770 is powerful enough for you, those can be had for as low as 120-130 USD. That would already be a huge upgrade over your X1900 series card. What resolution is your monitor?

i use a 42 plasma edtv non hd atm it suits my needs i also have a projector hd compatible 720 1080i

which now brings me back to GTX460/470 or another card?

i am not working and will be a present so need to be realistic.

You just copy-pasted my text from your profile wall with no indication that it was my text... that might be confusing to others. Can you please put that in quote tags, like this:

OK. At 720p, the CPU will more easily hold the GPU back than at 1080p. You will get great performance with a Sapphire 7770 Vapor-X $130 ($115 AR) + free Far Cry 3. It's a bit faster than most 7770, very affordable, and runs very cool and quiet. It's about as fast as a GTX 460.

7850 is a much more potent card than the 7770. I'd highly recommend the 7850 if this is a system you're going to keep a while and plan on playing at 1080i/p.

The 470 is power hungry (uses as much as a 7970) and runs hot, and is slower than a 7850.

Oh, I forgot to mention it's loud too.
