Obviously not as hot as the EVGA for $145 that was on the other day, but Microcenter has the Sparkle gtx460 on for $167 (and available for shipping) when you add it to the cart. Final price depends on where you live (tax + shipping), but there is a potential to save a few sheckels. I'm not sure about Sparkle though???

Not that bad, tax is $15 for me. If it was a 1gb version I think I would pick it up.

$173 shipped for me, no tax. Tempting, but I have a crossfire board so why go Nvidia?

Thanks, Tates. MIR for that EVGA card is only $10 and EVGA has an excellent track record for MIR fulfillment.

Note: the 768MB is noticeably slower than the 1GB version of the same card.

I'm not an expert, but this is probably dependent on what you are using it for. From the limited info that I've seen, they are pretty comparable.

Not true. It is not just less memory.

The meat of the reasons why is there.

The big winner here with respect to performance is the Zotac card, thanks almost exclusively to its 1GB configuration, affording additional RAM/L2/ROPs.

Currently the sweet spot would look to be a 1GB card with a lesser overclock, which isn’t great news for the overclocking-focused EVGA and Asus cards in this roundup. While they are cheaper than a full 1GB card, they still carry a price over MSRP which cuts in to the gap between 768MB and 1GB cards. Ultimately the additional RAM/L2/ROPs more than makes up for the higher overclocks the 768MB cards can attain in most situations.

less memory bandwidth as well. if I had a 1gb card I would test them at exact same clocks to get a true difference. anybody want to loan me your card? :whiste: the 768mb card still beats the gtx 275 by 9-3 with 2 ties according to anandtech bench and is MUCH better with power/heat/noise so it's no performance slouch, just don't buy one expecting to game with everything maxed at 1920x1080 or higher.

I'm certainly not saying that it isn't a great card. I'm just making sure people are aware that there are some differences under the hood aside from just the amount of memory.

Without a doubt, your point is well taken. There are differences besides memory, and if you can pick up the 1gb version for not much more, than that is the obvious choice. However for many gamers as well as for the folders out there, the 768mb version is a solid choice.

The rumored price drops are just frosting on the cake for a great card be it 768mb or 1gb.

current msrps are $199 and $229

Most benchmarks I've seen show the 1GB to be slightly less than 10% faster (vs the 768MB version) on average.
