Is it possible to run this setup, using a DVI-Component cable hooking up a GTX280 to an older CRT Highdef (1080i) TV?

Did the manufacturer of the graphics card provide the cable? If not it probably will not work.
Hmm? I think it probably will. What kind of inputs does your TV have? You'll just need to purchase the proper cable for it then go into the drivers and set up the proper resolution (if it's not already configured properly).

Standard DVI does not have component video output. It's up to the manufacturer to include this feature on the extra pins not used if they choose to. Hence why you need one specific for your card.
