I had taken my friends GTX 280 for tests and along with that his P45 and given him my 2x4850 and M/B for a few days now he wants to trade it..

GTX 280 for 2x4850's and a CF motherboard, Pls keep in mind he does not intend to give me his P45 so i will have to buy a SLi 750i or 780i.

First off, i was against this idea but then again the future proof is there with a SLi rig?? Then again DX10 and no Tessi tech. "DX11 supports it"..!!

What u all think is a GTX 280 worth exchanging 2x4850's and a good old CF board!!

BTW, this runs very cool where as my 4850 CF setup was like hell heat in my computer. I did also note this card takes AA much harder than the CF in Crysis!!

It's seems like a fair swap. $300 in cards + MB ? Price = $400 GTX280. Can you use any trade-up or step-up options? If so you can even jump to the GTX+ when it comes out.

you don't need to buy an SLi motherboard, unless you plan to run SLi. Why does he need your motherboard if he has a P45 motherboard? Sounds like a raw deal to me. You are giving him a couple of $200 cards and a $100+ motherboard and all he is giving you is a $450 graphics card and then you have to go spend another $100+ on a motherboard.

Crap deal. Keep your cross fire setup, since it's probably faster then GTX 280 in anything but Crysis.

while the GTX costs more, it does not necessarily WORTH more.

I (not you, I) would sell both cards on ebay and buy a 4870 or GTX260, whichever cheaper (Since the heat and noise and electricity costs of two cards are INSANELY high). But if you don't mind those things, then you would get better performance from your CF setup then any single card out there.

He wants my M/B because his M/B only has a single PCI-e slot!!!

Taltamir, i was thinking i will buy a new SLi M/B and add an SLi card later when the need comes to play "Crysis 3 maybe". I will run a single card till the time came for SLi setup!! BTW i love the degree by which the GTX 260 OC's much better than any 280.

Also in India the cost of GTX 280 is much higher than the states at around $600 "No the prices have not decreased as till date" and the 4870 cost just $70 more. The 4850 is much hotter and cost only about $230-240...!!!

Please show evidence that the GTX 280 fails in everything else.

If it was your two cards and your motherboard for his card and his motherboard, it might be more fair. Otherwise, I'd just stick with what you have.

Get him to trade you his motherboard and then it would be a nice deal. You have the power b/c he is the one who wants to trade. If he doesn't want to throw the mobo in say no deal and leave it like that.

No way. Sounds like he's ripping you off to me.

NOW if he's going to throw his motherboard in as well, then sure. If not then no.

Depends on the crossfire board you are trading... If it is a $75 P35 board then, hell ya, go for it. If it is a $250 x48 board then you are getting hoses.

mmm... i am suprised actually, i thought the GTX was slower then multi GPU but then i looked through your links... for example, if you press two and go to the next page they test a game that is slanted towards nv not towards amd...
http://www.legitreviews.com/article/734/10/
and the GTX beats the 4870 CF.

go to number 3 and go back a page... UT3

GTX wins against 4850 CF.

so somtimes the CF wins, sometimes a single GTX280 wins, depending on who the game favors.

Just an update i am keeping the 4850 CF setup.. GTX 280 is just too fragile for me if it dies or something i will cry a lot so 2x4850 fit the bill they keep the room hot and not that high on Noise.

The way i fig. it out is the 4850 is 10.1 better to play DX11 games than GTX280 and also has Tessla tech. that DX11 supports but Nvidia card lacks and also the media part of 4850 is better so thats a better deal in most cases!!!

Also he knows how much he paid for the P45 M/B and does not think that a P35 with 2x4850's are worth a P45 and a GTX280..

So no P45 means no GTX280 for me which is like the nudge i wanted to see on the brighter side of 4850's!!!

Could you resell the GTX 280 for $500-600 and buy a new 4850CF setup with cash remaining in your pocket?

If not, and he won't throw in the P45 motherboard, it's a no-go.

IMAO physX is 10 times better then 10.1... but 10 x 0 still equals to 0. Both technologies are worthless as of right now. (physX actually works in some games today, but is woefully underwhelming).

Still they do fit the bill, and in most cases will probably play better.

Funny you mentioned it, i tried physX with GTX280 and found a little drop in performance in physx intensive parts must be my imagination tough...

Well 2nd hand tech. is not the most regarded around these parts. One just may buy new GTX 280 for $100 more rather than buy used parts!!
