Rumor mill has it that the samples of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX275 that editors of tech magazines and websites will be receiving are different from the ones that will be shipped to board partners. The review sample GTX 275's are apparently based on the GTX 285 ASIC, just slowed down to be at 275 speeds, while the production cards will be GTX 260 ASICs without the 24 shaders disabled and sped up a little.

I guess that technically speaking, the GTX 260 and 285 chips are the same thing, with the only difference being a cluster of 24 shaders are disabled on the 260, so this probably wont have an effect on performance since they will ultimately be the same card.

I suspect this is cost-cutting measure, as it's probably cheaper to make a GTX 260 Core 216 better than it is to make a GTX 285 worse. However, if there is an effect on performance somehow, then this would have to be considered a bait-and-switch on NVIDIA's part.

What's with all of this crappy-themed news about NVIDIA about lately? It seems like they are constantly the focus of internet poo-tossing competitions. What gives?
