NVIDIA was kind enough to supply me with their new 180.47 drivers in advance of launch and note they contain performance improvements for many games.

I set out to test three of the biggest games of this holiday season and see how the new drivers would perform with a single GTX260 Core 216, which can now be purchased for $229.99 AMIR. (!)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814500069

I think this is the new bang for buck champ.

My test system was a reference NVIDIA GTX260 Core 216, Intel QX9650 on an EVGA 790i Ultra motherboard, 2GB of 2000MHz Crucial Ballistix DDR3. NVIDIA CP settings were "High Quality" for textures, AA/AF set to "Application Controlled". All games run at 25X16, settings as noted in pics.

http://www.villagephotos.com/p....asp?folder_id=2050741

I found 25X16 2X16X the best match of framerate and IQ at Far Cry2 and was very impressed with this performance from a single card.

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=2050743">http://www.villagephotos.c....asp?folder_id=2050743</a>

I used 25X 16 4X15X at Fallout3, and found the C216 pretty much rocked this game. The only spot in the FRAPs run where the framerate briefly dipped below 30fps is where I blew up a couple zombies in a huge explosion.

http://www.villagephotos.com/p....asp?folder_id=2050742

Dead Space pretty much stayed above 80fps, the C216 is more than enough card for this game. Note: I used the in game AA for this.

I plan to add Call of Duty World of War tests soon.

COD World at War

Not to shabby at all, 25X16 4X16X with a 29 fps minimum and a 47fps average in a big battle scene.

Hehe... I clicked on your FC2 link and at first read the title as FC2 24xAA and thought that you had pretty good frame rates for 24xAA. :)

You read correctly- the C216 is very power....

Heh- that would be cool, but no. ;)

Guru3D just posted a similar review with recent game titles and the 180.47s. It does look like the drivers have improved performance, as the 4870 1GB typically outperformed the GTX 260 c216 in previous reviews and older drivers.

The GTX 260 clearly pulls away in this review though, only losing in one title, BIA: Hell's Highway, trading blows in a few others, but beating the 4870 soundly in the majority of games tested. Too bad they didn't include some SLI and CF results, that would've been interesting as well.

Thanks, I'll revise. I did have the 180.47s in for these benches.

Per usual, Guru3d did a nice job.

nRollo,

Will these new drivers work on the 9800GTX as well ? Or are they just for the new 200 series ?

I would like a bit more performance as well :)

Well, how would Nvidia profit by increasing the performance of a card you already bought? Let's think realistically here... :p

Well, the new drivers increase performance, then the cards are reviewed *again* with the newer drivers. And once people read the reviews that are looking to upgrade, it could sway their choice to Nvidia instead of ATI.

And I have proof of that, It did for me :p

Just an opinion though.

What percentage increase in performance did the new driver allow you to achieve Rollo??
Also, is that the beta of the "Big Bang 2" driver??

Anyone know if the 180.48 drivers for Vista 64 are the same and have similar performance?
im assuming yes, but Vista 64 isnt always known to have the same performance improvements.

lol that's gonna be sweet, only thing you're missing is a few Intel SSDs. :)

But ya I love the 1200, it doesn't actually cool much better than the 900, it just has a lot more room.

Yea the 1200 is roomy. The Corsair psu looks awesome in there. The colors should all match very nicely. I'm lapping a TRUE black edition over the weekend. A feature I can't wait to see... the Rampage II's ROG emblem glows with a waxing/waning effect when the system is powered off..

I got the 180.47s off NVIDIA's press ftp site before the 48s launched. (site for beta drivers, software, etc. for reviewers)

These drivers are a disappointment for me.

E8600, 4 gigs RAM, vista 64

178 drivers on Crysis Warhead with Geforce 260 (original, not core 216)
26.52 fps on 1920 x 1200, gamer settings, 2x AA

180 driver, same setting,
26.57 fps. (after 3 loops)

a gain of .0018%, or about 2 tenths of 1 percent. Far short of the "up to 10% gains in Crysis Warhead" claimed in the patch notes.
