GTX 980 SLI needed for a Asus G-Sync 144mhz monitor?

Hi,

I have two GTX 980 in SLI. I traded in my 4k monitor (I didn't care for the quality) for the Asus PG278Q G-Sync 144mhz monitor. Do I still need two GPUs for this monitor since it's only displays at 2560 x 1440? Thank you.

David

I would like to use the new DSR feature from Nvidia but it does not work in SLI and G-Sync. (At least for my monitor)

Disable SLI and see if it's acceptable is what I'd suggest.

 OP has all the hardware to do the testing for himself. I'd think you'd still get a lot of benefit from SLI. I needed 2x970's to hit 100fps+ in Shadows of Mordor. If you want to see the benefit of 144hz, it'll likely be needed.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions. I disabled and do notice when I run a game at the higher settings like I do with SLI it slows down a little but I G-Sync helps out a lot with that. I just wish DSR could work with SLI+G-Sync.

I would keep SLI and turn up the settings

What is your opinion of gsync so far? What games are you playing?

I haven't heard anything about this before. Does anyone know if there's been an SLI review done with a Gsync monitor?

I notice that the games run a lot smoother. There's no skipping. I'm not sure if that's related to the G-Sync or running 144 Mhz.

I run a 120hz 1440p (Overlord Tempest) with dual OC'd 780's, and it leaves a ton to be desired. I don't think i'd be completely happy with dual 980's.

Gsync works with SLI, but DSR does not.

DSR works with SLI, I use it all the time. What doesn't work is MFAA, at all with SLI. I do not know if DSR + GSync works though. I don't have a Gsync monitor.

Though with a resolution of 2560x1440@144hz you might not get much benefit from DSR. Depends on what results you're looking for I guess.

Gsync works with SLI, but DSR does not.

Everything works with G-Sync on a single card. With SLI, DSR works but NOT if a G-Sync display is connected. It doesn't matter if G-Sync is disabled or not, just having a G-Sync display connected is enough to disable DSR on SLI. Really annoying limitation from Nvidia.

So to recap: SLI + DSR = OK, SLI + DSR + G-Sync = no go.

It seems that Nvidia has really dropped the ball on getting DSR and MFAA working properly with SLI and G-Sync as there hasn't been any news or progress on the matter for over 6 months now.

My Titan X works pretty darn well at 1440P, I'm sure you'll be fine, though I am not a big fan of multiple cards.
