GTX 980 Corrupting BIOS???

I have an older system that I wanted to test for gaming before I sold it to someone. It has an i5-3570K on a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H motherboard. I took my 980 from my Ryzen 5 system and installed it to the 3570K system, and the BIOS somehow was corrupted. So I tried plugging the display into the onboard graphics and it was fine. Re-installed the 980 and corrupted BIOS again! I put it back in my Ryzen system and it's fine, so what the heck is going on? I have never seen anything like this before. The PCI-E slot isn't the issue because I tried an old GTX 670 and it worked with that.
