Going to get my son a CyberPower PC and he insists on a 980 but the GTX 970 seems more logical

Not really. Only if you must have the current fastest and even then it's not that much of a difference.

Overclock the 970 and you may not even know the difference.

Thanks fellas!

Can we OC ourself or will Cyber have to do it?

He has an Alienware X51 now and I was hoping to just upgrade the card but not sure about the hassle

He should be thankful he's getting anything. I don't see how he feels he can "insist" upon anything if he's not paying for it.

If you feel 10-15% more performance is worth $300, then go for it.

If not, he'll be just fine with an overclocked 970.

Let's just say I had one of the most overclockable (and most expensive) 980's on the market, the Gigabyte G1 980, and I returned it for 2 MSI 970's in SLI for only $50 more.... Much better performance on my 30" 1600p monitor. The 970 was priced below what people were expecting, while the 980 is just priced too high over the 970. I could swing $150 more for 15% more performance for a high end card, not almost double the price.
