GTX 970 and 144Hz monitor

Hi,

My GTX 970 now runs a 27" monitor at 2560 x 1440 resolution and 60 Hz refresh.

I wonder whether the video card can drive a new monitor I'm considering, same resolution, ASUS Rog Swift PG279Q which has a 165/144 Hz refresh rate ?

It can drive it, but don't expect the full framerate in modern titles @ max settings. The good thing about the PG279Q though is that it has G-Sync so the refresh rate will adapt to the framerate of the game.

I recently bought (and returned) the 180Hz G-Sync monitor for my GTX 970. Getting the required frame rate wasn't a problem as long as you're willing to forego ultra settings.

Could you expand a little? Do you mean the fps was too low because of the refresh rate on the monitor ? If you reduce the refresh rate, the fps would increase ? What do you mean by the required framerate ?

I wanted to get 180fps locked in as often as possible, so I had to reduce settings to hit that target. Because it was a G-Sync monitor, it eliminates judder and tearing, BUT framerate dips are still very noticeable even when dropping from 180fps to 140fps.

Ok, The drop in fps which you noticed resulted from the relatively low powered 970 , not G-Sync, so you returned the monitor, presumably getting a monitor with a lower refresh rate so the 970 could match it with game fps.

No, I returned the monitors due to poor picture quality. I was happy with the performance otherwise.
