Title says 290X, but the card you linked to is a regular 290. It looks like you searched for 290X, but since Tri-X is in the name of that particular 290, it included that card in the results. Be careful about this.

So what are you looking for, a comparison between the 780 and a 290?

If you plan to keep the GPU for a while, I wouldn't recommend NV right now because of VRAM. 3GB is by no means inadequate now, but it will become so sooner than 4GB. Either go with AMD or wait to see what comes out.

On the AMD side, I would suggest going with the 290 over the 290x. The 290's performance "deficit" compared to the 290x is too small and the price you pay for that very little extra performance is too much. Just sayin'.

Bottom line is, it's 1080p. I'm at kind of the same dilemma as you are. NVidia's GPUs perform somewhat better at 1080p, but any high-end GPU available will play any game at 1080p without breaking a sweat. Only reason I think AMD is a better option right now is that the trend towards absurd VRAM requirements for games might continue and AMDs do have 33% more VRAM.

If you can get them for around the same price your nuts to get the 780 over the 290x. Just read reviews of cards your interested in. The Tri-X OC is one of the best. EVGA cards are top notch.

The driver topic is used as a last bastion of division between nv and amd and it doesn't exist. Judge the cards based on the performance, and features. The drivers from both manufactures are good/great and any reputable review site should have made this clear over the past 5-6 years.

The tri X is about $60 more than said 780.
I would have to return the 780 i just got and then get the tri X OC
total would be about $70 more on my part.

EDIT:
Almost forgot add another $60 out of pocket for a copy of watch dogs which came free with the 780. so i am looking at $110 more for a tri x OC

Why not get a 290.??
It is cheaper then 290x & 780.
In the past few weeks I have seen some 290s cards to go around $375.

From what I have heard 290 is only 5% slower than 290x & if you can clock yours high enough, it should be faster than most of the 780 & coming close to most stock 780Tis.

You can also pick up R9 290 cards in the FS/FT forum for around $260+shipping. Just paid that price for an XFX yesterday, that was not mined on (ended up being $275 with shipping).

I was pretty much set on that particular sapphire tri X OC 290X
are there any 290's that got as good a review as the tri X oc i posted?
Heat, speed and dependability are a big factor for me.
thats why i went with a EVGA gtx 780 in the first place, but now i am reading i would be much closer to a 780ti by getting the tri X oc?
Bottom line, i want the very next best thing to a 780ti without that price tag and it has to be new, not a fan of used GPU's

I think they have a 290 Tri-X OC.
Same cooler & same cooling performance & noise characteristics.

The GTX780Ti is a little faster out of the box, but only you can decide if it is $100 faster (Newegg prices) for the games you play. Truthfully, I wouldn't bother with either. My suggestion would be to look for a good deal on a non-reference 290 (non-X), overclock it a bit, save hundreds while getting GTX780Ti performance. You get plenty of vram and three games as well. That's a couple hundred dollars you can use on games, an SSD, cooling, or of course pocket it, etc. etc. That's the route I'd go.

Except when you look at Watch Dogs Day 1 AMD performance which was trash.

780ti is the fastest single chip on the market, and it is far superior as for as the cooling solution.

A 780 (non ti) is actually a better value at 1080p, which is what you asked I believe. You can find them for $479 w/ a factory OC.

My coworker just got one of these from Tiger Direct, so far it is quite a solid overclocker. Hynix memory, too.

Watch Dogs was released May 27th.
Nvidia's 337.88 drivers were released May 27th.
AMD's 14.6 drivers were released May 27th (has a lot of Watch Dogs improvements)

And anyway, day one is just day one. Who is having a better experience on days 2 - ∞?

so i should be looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...140604201149:s
and just OC it myself?

Yes.
Sorry for the late reply.
Somehow I didn't get a notification on my phone.
Also, look into this card

It's 3 slots, but it is the best cooler you can get for AMD R9 290 series, not counting the Lightning.

A 290 is even better value than a 780, at any Resolution.

290X is a very close second in performance and a much better value, and you can spin as much as you'd like, this is a fact. $100 price difference doesn't justify a few FPS specially when both are pushing 100 plus FPS anyway in most games. As for the superior cooling, there's lots of non reference cards with outstanding cooling solutions.

Keep in mind i already own the evga gtx 780 FTW.
I am asking because i have 30 days to decide if i want to keep it?
it is definitely a BEAST of a card no doubt. it oc's really great and is quiet and runs cool(i have yet see to it hit 75 degree's)
BUT if there is a better option for around the same $$$
I would return the 780 FTW for a full refund?
unfortunately i bought this 780 in a rush without really thinking of every angle.

How much you got the FTW for.
I have owned both a 780 FTW & a Classified.
Unless you have a really cheery 780 or you end up getting the worst 290, the 290 should always be faster.

I paid $525 total shipped and i know evga has a great warranty
and customer service so thats a plus i suppose.
I have not really pushed the FTW's core yet but i should be able to hit
1150 or maybe more.
it is the dual bios model like this one
http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-G.../dp/B00EM2JQ8E
I bought from EVGA direct and got it cheaper than amazon has it

Paid too much.
Return it.

Don't get me wrong, but do you have a lot of experience OCing.?

Doesn't seem that way.
1150 for a 780 is nothing.

they sell elsewhere for even moreo_O
I am new to oc' a gpu actually but that does not mean i am not a fast learner!
You said you HAD a classified and FTW, what do you use now?

Those are beast cards, but you can get a beast card that matches what you have and put almost $150 back in your pocket by getting an R9 290 ($150 gets a 250GB SSD these days, great cooling hardware, lots of games, etc). Not to mention you'll get 33% more vram and three games. EVGA is a top card maker and has a great reputation, and you already have the card, so I wouldn't blame you for leaving it as is. Not that you did 'bad', but for $525, you could have gotten a better card in my opinion.
