You already have the cards or are you buying used ?? and how much are you willing to spend for the GPU ??

I don't really want to spend more than $115 including the shipping. I don't see the point in buying a new card like a 950 when a 7950 outperforms it in 80% of games. It seems like the 7870 performs similar to the RX 460 as well.

Well then, from GTX770, 7950 and 280 i would go for the R9 280 if you can find them at $115 including shipping.

Tough question, the 770 often underperforms in new games at high settings, but the amd cards require more cpu power to get the most out of them, and the G3258 doesn't have a lot of it.

R9 280 looks like the most solid choice. Its newer so that means longer driver support, whilst the 7950 will be sooner to be cut off, even though its essentially very similar architecture. The 280 is also a tad bit more power conscious.

As we know Nvidia stops improving performance on basically 2 generations older cards, so the 770 is a goner, we are seeing it ageing terribly with Nvidia forgetting about the 700 series long time ago.

To tell you the truth, for that CPU i would go for a RX 460 even the 2GB version. Newegg currently has one (Powercolor) at $95 AR + $5,39 shipping

The R9 280 destroys the 460 2GB in performance, its not even a contest.

I cant seem to find the gtx 770 underperforming or in any bench mark in a bunch of newer games.

If it were me I'd wait for the new gtx1050 benchmark's in a week or two and make a decision then. Do you need a small card for your ITX build?

The framerate will be higher with the R9 280 but with the Pentium he will have a lot of stuttering making the higher fps not worth it. The Rx 460 will be much better suited for the dual core Pentium.

You are expecting the GTX1050 to launch lower than $115 ??

I don't necessarily need a freesync capable card since this ITX build will just be carried to friends and families houses for lanning and PC repair. The goal of the project was to keep the total under or around 300$ now and eventually, when they're cheap, put a K series i5 in and get rid of the G3258. Essentially this PC will have a lot more muscle a year or so from now, hence my decision to stay away from low end cards. The SG13 can fit most full size cards so I don't see a point in getting something because of its size

the 280 is not a similar architecture to the 7950, it's 100% the same, same GPU; support will be dropped at the same time for both; like it happened before, the re-branded products and original named ones got to legacy always at the same time.

a 280 might be more power efficient I guess, if the rest of the board is better, but it's the same thing in the end...

the 770 can be slower in current games, and lacks 1GB of ram, but in some games it can be quicker... remember the 770 is basically a 680, so it can compete with the 7970 in some games.
also for the long run, Nvidia has consistently delivered better support for old products, with longer non legacy support and bug fixes, since the 7950 is almost 5 years old, is something to consider;

at the end of the day, the 3GBs are a nice advantage, and you should check benchmarks from your favorite games to see which one is better there; if it was me I would be tempted to wait for the 1050/1050 ti to see what pricing and performance looks like.

I wouldn't buy 2GB today, full stop. Just a bad idea especially if you plan on CPU upgrading to extend the life of this thing. That leaves you with the 280. But buying 2012 era tech in 2016 kinda sucks too. I'd wait and see how the 1050 Ti shakes out

I was under the impression that there were 4gb GTX 770's, that's why I was considering it. I have a HD7970 in my main computer and for what I play, there's no bottleneck at all. I can play GTA V on high quite well with an overclocked i5 2500k, Battlefield 4 runs smooth, CS:GO gets 300fps on average with mins around 190, Guild Wars 2 runs fine as well. I know the performance between the HD7950 and HD7970 isn't that far off which is why I'm still considering it and which is also the reason I see no point in upgrading my 7970 in my main rig yet. The 4gb GTX 770 in benchmarks from a year or so ago looks quite stout, but I keep reading that ATi cards got better recently because of firmware updates and drivers, while the nVidia cards didn't age well.

I highly doubt the mentioned 1050 Ti will be around $100 and I don't really want to spend more on that because that money could have gone to a more powerful CPU, but with the current budget of $300, the G3258 seemed like a viable option right now

For a new sub $100 GPU like the RX 460, 2GB is fine because you will only play games at 1080p Medium/High and no AA most of the times.

Looking at these ~$100 cards for my G3258 itx build. It's going into a Silverstone SG13 case with a 500w Corsair power supply. Whats the better buy for the overclocked G3258 in todays games?

I definitely would not get the 770! And the 1050 coming out will not be in your price range. I would go with the 280 or 460 that was mentioned above.

Go to gamegpu.com to see reviews of new games with older cards including 770 and 7950. They don't have a 280, but they have 280X. Seeing as a 280 is a factory overclocked 7950 (the 7950 here is the dreadfully low 800MHz version), you could guess its performance to be somewhere inbetween 7950 and 280X (perhaps the vanilla 7970 is comparable).

Traditionally 770 was faster, but Kepler is sort of hit or miss now. You'll see all kinds of scenarios: where it's 2012 proper order and 770 is ahead, but also where Kepler is neglected in drivers / dev support and it's a draw or even behind. But decide for yourself rather than listen to partisans if you are going with Kepler vs GCN 1.

So I came across a craigslist listing near me for an MSI R9 280X for $85 with the original box and accessories. To me this seems like a killer deal. Seller said it works flawlessly. Worth dropping my coin? I think so but maybe others have different opinions.

That's a great deal. You won't find anything better. R9 280X > 770 2GB or 4GB. The more demanding a modern game is, on average, the faster R9 280X will be against GTX770. Since the CPU you are pairing with will be slow to begin with, might as well save as much $ as possible in the R9 280X vs. 770 class. In that case, it's an even stronger case for an $85 R9 280X. If the 770 you are considering is 2GB, I wouldn't buy it at all.

Not can be slower, but it is actually slower. AMD has by far superior drivers and performance for AAA games released in the last 5 years for R9 280X compared to GTX770. Reviewing GameGPU's data since November 2014, 770 is getting blown out by R9 280X/7970Ghz in many titles.

IMO, you should just pass on your HD7970 and buy yourself a newer RX470/480/GTX1060 GPU. This way, you get a nice upgrade for your own rig and the net upgrade for yourself will be $100. Pass on your 7970 as if it costs $100 and get yourself a $185-190 RX 480 4GB or GTX1060 3GB. Very cheap upgrade over the next 2 years. AMD should drop prices on RX 470 to $169 this month, making it an even cheaper budget upgrade for you from your 7970.

I was thinking of going with an RX 470 for my main PC and the 280x for the itx build. I want to see if something comes out with a different type of cooler. I don't like the semi-reference designs currently available.

Wow that 280X is a good deal. May be able to get a 290 in your price range though.

Make sure to measure the total GPU distance the case can accommodate because R9 280X is a fairly long videocard, especially some of the Sapphire, Gigabyte or Asus versions.
