GTX 770 vs. 780

I've long been an AMD supporter, but due to the crypto craze I'm switching teams. (Also, if AMD raises the MSRP of the 290, I'll be STAYING on the NVidia side of the fence). But my last GeForce was a Geforce 4.....so I am totally out of touch.

I see a lot of hate for the 770, but I'm looking at the benches and its 2x as fast as my 5850 and the price is about right (well, OK, I feel like I'm getting the shaft on pricing for ALL my parts this time around, but it seems to be the best price/performance right now considering.)

Is there something I am missing about the 770? I cant see spending at LEAST $150 more for the 780, I'll be gaming as always on my new rig but only at 1920x1080. Seems like the 770 is the way for me to go, yes?

Also, am I correct in thinking that high temps arent quite as big of an issue for NVidia as they used to be?
 
770 sounds like a fine choice for 1080p. I'm not sure what the hate is that you've been hearing, my 770 does everything I ask it to.

As far as the 780 goes, that is also a very good card. Although the GK110 GPU is much more powerful than the GK104 in the 770, I'm not sure it is needed for you at 1080p. Some might tell you 2GB won't be enough at 1080p in the future, but I tend to disagree with that.

Aside from the sticky at the top of this forum, it seems like every time the subject comes up the default reply is always "No, spend the extra and get the 780 over the 770". Ive heard it enough that Im wondering what I'm missing.

770 isn't a bad card, it's just not THAT big of an upgrade over the 670. Maybe a 15-20% boost in performance, but with 80 watts more power consumption under load according to the Anandtech review.

That said, a 770 is MORE than enough for 1080p. You'd be crazy to pay the more than $100 price difference for a 780.

EDIT: and temperature hasn't really been an issue since the Fermi (GTX 480) days. Nvidia's stock coolers work just fine and are reasonably quiet.

Well not necessarily if you want to max out demanding games a 780 is a fine choice, considering games like metro and bf4 are pretty demanding at 1080p.

check out amazon warehouse deals as well as EVGA B-stock, a lot of times you can find 780s going for less than 450:

GTX770 and the GTX780 are great designs.
If you don't care about the 2gb limit then GTX770 is a good choice.
The 4gb gtx770 model is priced to close to the GTX780 for my taste and you might as well shell out for a gtx780.

Reference is very cool and quiet.
AIB generally improve on an already great card.

Agreed. If you want to run decent levels of post processing, then a GTX 780 is not overkill for 1080p. Especially if you have a 120Hz or 144Hz monitor.

Definitely. Gigabyte's Windforce model has better thermals and lower noise, and can be had for the same price as a reference version. I'm very happy with my GTX 670 Windforce.

a 770 isn't MORE than enough if you want to play the latest games coming out in 2014. that said, we still don't know the system requirements for stuff like the witcher 3 but judging by any previous releases a 780 will be good for 1080p and high settings without ubersampling. also you have to think that since games made exclusively for the next gen consoles will be slowly trickling out this year (unlike games like ghosts and BF4 which are for previous gen as well as next gen. the system requirements will only be steeper

crysis 3 cant even break 60fps on the highest settings in 1080p with a 780

Well now....isnt that interesting. For that kind of price, I'm thinking a 780 is the way to go.

Anyone have experience with the B-stocks? I know of EVGA's stellar reputation for quality so I'd think the card itself is solid.
 
OP - can you give us an idea of what games you play the most, and provide the details of your system, as in CPU, power supply, etc.?

Without that information, it's really hard to provide an accurate recommendation.

By the way, many of those EVGA B-Stocks come from trade-ins through the Step-Up program. One of those 780 SCs at $440 is mine. You'll probably have good luck with them. 😉

I'm the OP. I havent totally speccedout my new build yet. And as far as what I play the most, everything. I want a solid rig that can run anything I wanna throw at it, that's always been my mentality. Right now I like Euro Truck Simulator 2 which isnt at all demanding. In a week or 2 I might be playing a lot of something else. I loved Metro 20133, havent gotten around to Last Light yet. But I will and of course I want to run it as high as I can with the hardware I have. I like flight sims too, so the CPU is also important, the only thing I have right now that actually works my CPU pretty hard is the A-10 sim. (My current CPU is an i5-750 runing at 3.7 and it's still a screamer)

However, as for generalities I'll be getting the 4670k, reusing my 8 gigs of DDR3 1600 (I can add more down the line if I feel like I need it, but for right now it does me just fine), running Win7 64 bit and I'll be adding another 2TB to the 2TB I currently am using, I'll just throw the old HDDs in the new rig. Havent picked the specific motherboard yet, specific PSU, hard drives, etc. I'm just trying to get a feel for best options right now.


Also, good to know on those B-stocks. I really, really appreciate the heads up. I think that's the way I'm gonna go. For that small of a price increase for a 780, NOW I'm swayed. And with EVGA's reputation for quality I'll feel good about it.
 
The GTX 780 is roughly about 18% faster on average than the GTX 770. It's only when you get up to resolutions above 1600p, or start using ridiculous amounts of AA (like MSAA 8x) that the GTX 780 starts to really pull away courtesy of it's greater bandwidth.

The GTX 770 is a great card for 1600p and below though. The only weaknesses it has are the 2GB frame buffer (but then a 4GB part is available for a bit extra), and lower bandwidth compared to the 384 bit bus cards.. For a 256 bit bus card though, the GTX 770 has a lot of bandwidth (224 GB/s)

If you're playing at 1080p, neither drawback should affect you.

That said, overclocking the memory can result in significant gains on the GTX 770, unlike most other cards.

For the games you play, the CPU will matter much more than the video card, except for Metro Last Light, which you said you might buy. If you can grab one of those B-Stock 780s, by all means go for it, but I'd bet that for your overall gaming experience, a 770 will be more than sufficient.

Also, just a tip: you really should add an SSD to your system. It's the single best upgrade you can make to any system.

I'm just throwing out examples, I like to play what's good. I enjoy most all genres if it's a good example of it. Im not normally a fan of FPS, but like I said, Metro was enjoyable, and I am a HUGE fan of the STALKER games. I tried Crysis back when, because of all the buzz about it.

I loved Mass Effect, tried The Witcher, (it was pretty meh to me but still), I like plenty of games that need the GPU horsepower as well as the CPU so a good all around system is always what I shoot for.

Those EVGA b-stocks are too tempting, I think that's the way I'm gonna go. Hopefully they're in stock when I'm ready to pull the trigger.
 
Its a 2 year old card basically. Its just a rebadged and slightly overclocked 680. Doesn't make it a bad card, I still get excellent frame rates on two 680's but the general advice is always to get the fastest card possible before doubling up. Its still a high end card, its just not extremely high end like the slightly faster 780. Personally I think the 770 is a little overpriced for what it is, I would have expected its price to have dropped more than it has but considering the competition in this performance bracket it does fine for the price. I don't think you can go wrong with the 770 or the 780.

PS there are no teams for Graphics cards, just cards with price/performance/features and all the differences there in. A lot more differences today than there were 5 years ago.

Don't worry EVGA constantly updates its B-stock listings, if you decide to go with one of those I'm sure they will have it
 
Just need to say thanks a ton for those links again. I never looked through amazon warehouse deals. Some great finds in there. Just putzing around I have a great build specced out for $1131, all high end parts. Overall, if I ordered what I used as an outline, I'd save 2-300 overall.
