What resolution do you play at, what are the rest of your system specs, and what games do you typically play?

I'm gonna ask you an honest question, don't get angry:

Are you an EVGA-only loyalist?

The best price to performance around there is the Radeon R9 280X. For the same price of that 760, and it smashes it in performance. There is no contest. And it'll go toe to toe with that 770, for $100 less.

Get a Radeon R9 280X.

Edit: Normally I'd say if you MUST go EVGA, get the 2GB 760 and save the cash. 2GB is fine at 1080. But you have an older system, so I take it you tend to hold onto hardware for a while. Going for more memory might actually help you in the long term. But then you are in 280X territory, which comes with the 3GB that already gives you this "future proofing" extra memory for no extra cost, unlike Nvidia.

So... all roads point to the 280X. Honestly.

Are you going to stick with 1080p for a while? If so, the 2GB 770 would be fine instead of the 4GB version.

So... all roads point to the 280X. Honestly.

The 280X is a great card but it is basically sold out everywhere due to BTC miners. The price difference also isn't significant once you sell the 3 free games that comes bundled with the 770, most people can get 50-60$ easily from selling them so that will generally offset most of the cost - once that is taken into account, there really isn't a price difference at all between the 280X and the GTX 770. Even the 4GB 770 can be had around ~320-330 or so once you sell the games. Since OP is at 1080p, there really isn't a compelling need for more than 2GB so he could get that for around 300-330$ and then sell the games to get a card for a net price of 250-280$.

Both cards are equally good, but one is available and one is....well you won't find it anywhere. Maybe an XFX but I would generally avoid XFX at all costs due to the poor quality they had with their 79xx DD line. You can also find TONS of sellers trying to price gouge on the 280X due to the mining craze, it isn't uncommon to see cards @ NCIX and amazon at 400$+. Price gouging is getting out of hand right now, but to be fair it is mostly 3rd party sellers on amazon.

As far as the 760 and 770, the performance difference is IMO fairly significant. The 760 performs similarly to the GTX 580, while the 770 is a good 25% faster from what I recall. I think it's worth the additional $. Of course if you're lucky and can find a 280X anywhere, that is an option as well. I haven't been able to find anything except junk XFX cards in my search.

Also, this is the 770 I recommend:

http://www.newegg.com/Shopping/Shopp...82E16814121770

299.99$ after 10$ MIR for black friday weekend, and you can sell the 3 free games for 50-60$ very easily. Once you do that, you get a 770 for the net cost of around 250 bucks. You don't really need 4GB of VRAM for 1080p, 2GB will be fine - keep in mind VRAM doesn't increase performance, it merely lets you run substantially higher resolutions such as 4k or super high surround resolutions with higher MSAA levels / image quality settings. Since you're at 1080p, 2GB will be fine.

Yeah, you can get $45 worst case scenario for all 3 codes right now (checking ebay). That's the best value card, the ASUS 770 2GB.

My only concern is he is on a 5 year old system. He keeps his hardware. 2GB at 1080 in 2015-2018 is gonna be hurting. But it'll be fine for at least 2 years, and even when games are using more VRAM it's still a fast card that can brute force it albeit with a performance hit. Much like the GTX 580 1.5GB in today's games.

Not to hijack the thread, rather to add more information for others (and me and OP) - what if one moved on to 1920x1200 monitor? Would that change the suggestion here?

I feel that in that case 280x would make even more sense, wouldn't it? Or may be 760 4GB (less performance, more "future proofing")?

2GB is fine for 1200p, and you can buy either the 280X or GTX 770 and they will perform more or less the same overall. The issue with the 280X is that it is sold out everywhere due to bitcoin miners, so that makes the 770 the only choice unless you get lucky and find a 280X at MSRP... It is also being price gouged quite a bit at this point as well.

The Asus 2GB DC2 770 at 300$ is a good deal with 3 free games, which you can sell to offset part of the cost...but if you can find a 300$ 280X by all means go for it, it's a great GPU. I haven't been able to find any except an XFX brand card, which I wouldn't want to mess with.

The new XFX 280x is getting great reviews. New cooler design, good quality and great performance. Personally, I love my XFX.

Again, not to hijack, but to provide some more food for thought...

I've seen relatively bad noise levels reported on one of the 280x I have an access to (not in US) and an awful power consumption.

Gigabyte R9 280X OC 3 GB

SAPPHIRE DUAL-X R9 280X 3GB GDDR5 OC

The review (which I am guessing would do the same for Sapphire, which I couldn't find):

Gigabyte R9 280X OC 3 GB

That is kind of disappointing.

There is also 7970 option, no?

Thank you all for your input. I ended up just going with an EVGA 770 because of customer support. In the past I had 2 cards have issues over a year after I bought them and they were both replaced quickly. One of them as actually replaced with a higher model since they didn't have mine in stock. I personally see value in good customer service. Plus I had over $150 in Amazon cards from work. So it all kind of worked out for me.

I think this is just a building block for me. Im going to keep an eye out for deals through the holidays and might just replace all the main parts, ie MB, CPU, RAM, etc.

Once again thank you all for your help.

Good. choice. I've only had eVGA twice: with my 2 GTX 460 1GB SLI and my 2 GTX 650 Ti BOOST 2GB. I find their overall quility to be the best. I would never go with another vendor. IMHO, Asus make the best mobos and the WORST GPUs! I had 2 Asus 512MB 8800GTs in SLI and I had nothing but problems (Hope I don't get fined $3,500.00 for this negative Asus review)! LOL!
