For someone planning to go 4k in 1.5-2 years with a gaming rig, is going SLI with a pair of GTX 760 4GB a good idea for the moment? I want to have smooth 60+ FPS until I get to 4k.

I don't think so, to get smooth 60 fps your talking at least 2x 780 ti. I don't think you can buy a system today that can really play 60 fps smoothly at 4k in all games on highest settings, just doesn't exist. Of course almost anything on the lowest settings can get to 60fps on 4k, its just a question of practically what graphical settings you are willing to drop to.

Go ahead and throw another 760 in there for fun, but you will need to upgrade to the newest single card flagship for 4k down the road.

Yeah 2x 4GB 760's should see you well for quite some time yet. It should outperform a 780TI most of the time (depending on Drivers and SLI compatibility) and you'll probably be able to crank Vram limited settings up higher.

Op, What rez are you at now? 1080p. If so, sli 760 should fare pretty well to get 60 fps. the problem will be when an sli profile isn't released/working for said game. I personally like one strong card for that reason.

I'd like to say a single GTX 760 does pretty good at 1080p, but with next gen games starting to arrive that statement wouldn't hold much water.

760 is more than adequate at 1080p.

Where does some of this outlandish stuff come from?

Only if he is willing to reduce settings, I assume he wants close to max.

SLI GTX 760 4 GB would be to get 60 fps for the next 2 years in 1080p before I make the big jump to custom water cooled GTX ''flagship'' + i7-whatever in 2 years for 4k.

Since you already have a 760 4gb, I think it would be a pretty good move.
