Yea another one of those threads. Ive been searching around and cant seem to find what im looking for. Ive got a GTX 690 running a single ASUS ROG Swift at 1440P 144Hz. while it does fine in most my games I play now (Quake Live, TF2) im curious to know if it will struggle on AC: Unity at 1440P 144hz.

My immediate response will be probably at full specs of the monitor and game...but will it be terrible enough to need to upgrade to a single 980?

obviously I could down spec the game to 1080p at 144hz but why not use the full potential of the monitor.

opinions on if it is worth the upgrade or am I just worrying over nothing?

Machine spec's
EVGA X79 dark
i7-4930K
Corsair Dominator GT 16GB 2133MHz
EVGA GTX690 4gb
Samsung 830 pro 512gb
2X wd black 1TB raid 0

Why wouldn't you wait until the game comes out?

Also, generally speaking, a 980 is not an upgrade from a 690 except in regard to VRAM. At 1440p, you may exceed the 690's limits in some newer games. When VRAM is not an issue, the performance of a 980 will not be noticeably higher. That's why you should just wait until you have the game, and then decide. You'll be in a good position to know whether the VRAM is an issue in AC.

If your main games are Quake and TF2, buying a 980 to run at 1440p in one new game probably isn't a wise investment. Dropping to 1080p makes a lot more sense rather than going for a sidegrade for the rest of your games.

I'd try out the game with G-sync to see if you can live with the lower framerates that you expect to get in AC: Unity.

only reason I don't want to wait to see the game is because the local hardware shop called me and they have a 980 on hold for me if I want it

I would still try the 690 first. It's not like the 980 is EOL. You'll be able to get one if you need it.

Unless you are getting a deal on the 980 (ie more than 10% off retail), there's no need to have them hold one. They are usually in stock online, unlike the 970...

Well I went to the store today and caved. They had a 980 ac acx open box at a discount because the box got opened and not used. Plus I got ac:unity free with purchase which will be an up coming promotion starting on Tuesday for all 980 cards

You should have gotten dual 970s. 980 is not an upgrade over the 690.

It's an upgrade in some respects. I went from a GTX 690 to a single GTX 980 and it was worth it.

1. No SLI issues
2. Much quieter and much less heat produced
3. Similar performance and in some cases better performance
4. Only cost me $175 to upgrade after selling GTX 690 (that I bought used)
5. New tech (I like shiny stuff)

Price isn't everything to true tech enthusiasts.
