GTX 680 worth the upgrade?

I currently own a GTX 580 with a 750 watt power supply. Would upgrading to the GTX 680 be worth it? I do not have the budget for a new GPU and a PSU. I think it is, I just want some other opinions. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I upgraded to a 680 from a 580.If ur 580 is stock one u will notice better thermals, noise.Regardless 680 will consume way less power while being faster. If u can sell ur 580 for a reasonable price then yeah go ahead with the jump. There are some custom 670s which u can take a look at as well.Ur psu will be fine for a 680.

Well considering that you could probably get a good $250 for that GTX 580, you would effectively be spending around $250 for a new one, which is a hell of a deal and a hell of an upgrade. I would say yes 100% if you can manage that.

You would be better off buying a Factory OCd 670 from Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI.

I would suggest waiting or buying another GTX 580 & running SLI.

580 sli with a 750 watt psu may not be such a good idea. the op needs to list ALL of his specs including the EXACT model psu that he has and what resolution his monitor is.

This guy seems pretty pissed he spent 600 pounds for a 10fps gain in BF3 @ 1080p going from a 580 to a 680. In his words " there's absolutely no point at all ".

Really depends on the resolution you play at. At 2560x1440 there was a noticeable difference between a GTX 580 and a GTX 680 for me.

The range between 30 and 60 is the area where you really notice a difference in average fps, especially when you take minimum fps into account. Much lower and it's all kind of sluggish, and much higher above 60 doesn't generally make much of a difference to most people.

For someone running BF3 at 1080p with FXAA they will get higher avg fps in BF3, but they probably won't notice as much of a difference.

Then again, they could switch over to 4xMSAA with the GTX 680...

Lets say you can sell your 580 for 250$. That may be pushing it since 300$ cards new can perform better than the 580, but if you can - is a 20-25% increase worth 250$? Its your call. Some people want the latest and greatest (like me) and others want functionality....if the 1 gen old 580 is still good for what you do (and the 580 is still great of course) some people won't bother.

And then there's the next gen from AMD and nvidia, of course the gk110 will be released next year for nvidia and AMD has just had a tapeout for the sea islands 8000 series. Another thing to consider -- if the 580 still performs well for you (i'm not sure what resolution you're running)

You trust your graphs and theories, I'll trust the guy who isn't lying to himself.

Quantifiable and reproducible data plus personal experience do tend to be good metrics for determining the worth of something IMO. I've bought enough video cards to certainly have wasted money on some of them, but using EVGA's step-up to get into a new GTX 680 was not one of these instances.

More to the point though, I didn't actually disagree with your post. You mentioned that someone running 1080p didn't really seem to think his upgrade to a GTX 680 was worth it. From looking at the numbers I could see how that could be the case, but it becomes a different story as you increase resolution.

Aside from that, "worth it" is a pretty subjective metric. I also ran an original Fermi card, like you are currently. The reduction in noise alone would be worth it to me to upgrade from a GTX 480.

Uh most of the people on here or any other forum base their buying decisions on reviews... based on graphs.

I'd rather not trust a single player bench in a multi-player game, that's your decision and a foolish one at that.

If you want high res gaming you'd be better off with 2 gpu's and it would be cheaper. If you overclock you're stuck with another 250 watt card so power/noise isn't even a selling point unless you leave it at stock as all these cards come with the same annoying blower style cooler and sit at obnoxious 80c temps with fans that'll ramp up just as loud if you OC. Videos like the one I posted are all over youtube, one disappointed buyer after the other. Not discounting your purchase, it's just that most people who get these cards don't see any difference.

Look at the games and resolution you play at. Is you 580 limiting you? If so, upgrade. If not, keep it.

Not sure why continues to be difficult for people.

You're suggesting a sub-$500 dual card CF/SLI setup for higher rez, single monitor gaming? IMO, the general rule is to get the best single card you can. If that doesn't do it for you... get another! A cheaper dual card setup is almost never a better option.

...As far as the fan noise goes, I've actually owned most of the cards being discussed. So you can trust in your theories, but I will base my opinions on my own personal experiences with the cards.

Past 50% fan speed 680's are just as audible as anything else, you're full of it. I guess you're just in the habit of suggesting people waste their money.

Heh, yea as foolish as your assumption. What was the saying about assuming...?

Anyway, BF3 is the only game that matters eh? Did I mention it? If so, please point to it in my post. I made a general statement. Reading comprehension ftw 🙄

I think it's worth it. People claiming it's 10fps difference are full of crap. Look at any benchmarks, it's more than 10fps. People claiming that SP benches don't matter are also full of it because while MP might be the point of BF3, we are comparing video cards and MP is too unpredictable to get a consistent score. Further, if someone is playing this game on an AMD Phenom II for example and upgrades from a 580 to 680, yeah they probably will feel disappointed if they look at an fps counter on a populated server. Everyone knows you need a big CPU for BF3 MP. We aren't discussing that though.

I got a 680 on day 1, from a 5870 it was a great upgrade. Today I'd get a 670 and save the difference. For you, I think the 670 is still the better value but you need to compare the difference between 580 and 670.. I'd personally skip this generation if I were you and wait to see what the next big kepler GPU brings.
