Its my understanding that the lower the temps the higher the boost clock. Is that incorrect?

The GPU Boost is impacted when GPU temperatures exceed 70*C, in increments of 5*C (75/80/85, etc.). As long as the card stays under 70*C, there is no adverse effect on GPU Boost. This is why Kepler cards running at 35*C won't overclock any higher than cards running at 70*C.

If you are going to watercool, HD7970 is better since you'll be able to hit > 1300mhz as which point it will outperform the 670 OC. Otherwise I see no benefit to getting a $100 GPU block over the $400 Gigabyte 670.

Actually Gigabyte 670 OC can often overclock > 1300mhz on air. This is pure luck of the draw based on the card you'll get.

Finally someone who knows how to take an in-focus pic of a circuit board lol. In seriousness, your pics make me want to dump my galaxy gtx670, the gigabyte board looks very robust compared to the anemic reference board with barely adequate vrms.

Yes, however it can be hotwired much more easily than reference boards. The limit is 1.45v :O

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?280578-OC-air-water-LN2-Asus-GTX680-DirectCU-II

But look at the results.

Max aircooling @ 1325mhz

Max watercooling @ 1435mhz with volt mod:
680DC2_B1435_3D11.jpg

GTX680 Direct CUII = $520 + $50 for that waterblock = $570.

GTX670 OC delivers 90% of that performance for $400.

At that point might as well grab a single 670 now and add a 2nd one for SLI when the price drops to $250 for a real performance boost. 10% performance is not going to affect playability imo.

On max air overclocks, there is almost no performance difference between a 670 and a 680 at 1080P:

3113

3114

While for 2560x1600, 1300+mhz HD7970 is also very good.

This. Ask any engineer in the semiconductor field. Less heat means less power consumption.

Lowering the temp of the GTX6xx GPU will lower it's power draw giving it a bit more headroom for boost clocks.

It's all about the numbers with Don.. Does he even play games? lol

Flagship GPUs have typically always provided diminishing returns, but if you can afford it then why not? I had the cash this time around to go with the $540USD DC2T over the $400 670. I just didn't want to gamble $400 with the 670 and end up with a chip that can't boost over 1100mhz. That's not to say there's any guarantee the DC2T will hit 1300mhz, but I do feel these chips are higher "binned" so to speak. SLI with the 670s isn't really an option for me since I didn't feel like upgrading the mobo and PSU. Eventually down the line I do plan to SLI, but right now I wanted to spend up to $550 and the DC2T fit the bill.

I honestly really wanted to like the AMD cards this generation, but for numerous reasons I have to go NVIDIA this time around. However, I'll still be keeping my eye out for the GHz edition and better driver releases.

I am bored of black on black everything and trying to get it to match with the rest of the components in your case. That's what chicks do - color match everything. Bring on the performance, even if it means pink PCB with purple fans. I'll take GK110 painted lime green or brown. ;)

The black on black and black rims has been murdered out to the point of being thuggish/boring (unless you are in the mafia or drive a luxury car like S600). At least blue adds a touch of color and it's not like there aren't any blue memory heatsinks (g.Skill ares, corsair vengeance, etc.).

The reason Gigabyte uses blue is because it's the company color.

Ordinarily I don't care about color, but the other day I just had to pass on this deal even though it was the cheapest fan that still met my requirements: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835228019

After reading the scary EVGA thread over at their forums for their GTX 670 reference card... I canceled my AMAZON order and went with this Gigabyte GTX 670...

Blue is one of my favorite colors anyway... I have blue and red LED lights in my case... :D

I thought it was the SuperClocked card that had problems? The reference one should be fine, though for the same price the Gigabyte OC is a no brainer

Only reason to do water is silence. Normally water gives you 10-20% over air with voltage and keeping cards @ < 50C. Not so with 6xx. I get 1272 on water and got about that on air. People are very disappointed with hydro coppers as well, expecting high clocks and dont get them. But silence is a good enough argument for me. I've water cooled my video cards since they begun putting fans on them.

If you want to play with water clocks I highly suggest a card like 7950. HWbot shows 1250Mhz avg on water with them. Thats a 450Mhz OC.

Yeah the 680s do not go anywhere they don't go on air with water cooling. My OC results were identical after moving to water.

They run really cool on water, high 30s under load for the most part. I may just get a third cheap 680 when the 780/GK110 card releases and add it in to my loop. No point in getting two likely hot GK110s when there are no games 680SLI cannot max @ 1600P.

Depressing.

Basically this. Water is damn near worthless on the 600s, until you get an EVGA classified or a voltage unlocked asus. The asus requires a 350$ motherboard and the EVGA card will require EV Bot in addition to the card costing 700$ a pop....

asus dc has 3 spots for measuring and 3 volt tweak spots 10k pot to ground "no special motherboard needed" will start to up the voltige around 5k ps measuring don,t rely on software (you also have to remove a resitor en connect a other point short) so no special board needed does not help a lot to oc 1450 somthing with luck

You did an atrocious job paraphrasing my thread. Ladies and gentlemen, do not listen to this guy :D
