I am in the process of putting together a new computer (Ivy Bridge I hope) in the next month and was looking to go with a GTX680, but a local guy has an EVGA GTX590 Classified for sale. Is the GTX 590 worth considering? Anyone with experience on this card or constructive opinions welcome. He wants about the same price for it as a new 680 will be. It will be driving a Dell U3011.
Thanks,
Rick

no way would I fool with the gtx590 at this point unless you got a killer deal which at 500 bucks you are not IMO. its certainly a little faster than the gtx680 but you will get a more consistent gaming experience with the gtx680 while also using 200 watts less.

The GTX 590 is only attractive as a compute monster.

If you are going to fold/crunch with it, the 590 is a beast.

I can't imagine buying it for any other reason, the GTX 680 is just such a great card :)

There are lot of factors.Do u like multigpu?(i myself don't)Can u bear the extra heat and noise? What is the price difference between them?590 is definitely faster than 680 but is it worth the hassle?I would choose the 680 myself

I wouldn't even consider a 590. The 680 is a far better product.

This. If you want something below $400 get a 7950 and overclock it well

But honestly anybody who can't afford to spend $700-1000 on gpus in a year shouldnt buy a 1500 usd monitor because even that is more than what you can afford

Sell the monitor and buy something balanced for your computer. Or just go buy a 680 today and 685 later

HA! That's ridiculous.

A monitor is likely one of the best investments you can make. Unless you were an idiot, and bought a 20" professional CRT in ~2004. (sigh)

He might do more than play games, you know. Or might be judicious in spending his money. It's not about having the money, it's about choosing how to spend it. Two different things, entirely.

GTX 590 is a poorly engineered card with a very weak VRM section, so you can forget about overclocking. It's faster but IMHO not enough to be worth the driver hassles and much increased power usage. GTX680 is the better choice.

680 for sure unless you get an absolutely killer deal on the 590. The 680 is actually faster than the 590 in a few games at stock, although the classified is factory oc'ed.

If you only want to game on it, a monitor is a luxury meant for those with deep pockets. I have owned a TN panel and a IPS panel and the difference is enough only to justify if money isn't an issue at all. If you are on a budget, then anything over $250-400 on a monitor is a waste of money for a gaming rig. On a budget means if you spend less than $1500 a year on your PC.

You can buy a LED TV which are often pretty reasonably good as well and you get lots of good deals under $400-600. There is no reason to justify spending $1200+ on a monitor if money is a big issue.

And even if it is for work, then you can go with a 23 or 24" which is likely to be 1/3rd to 1/2 the size, 27" IPS is pure luxury. I can understand having 680 or 7970 as a necessity or a basic luxury but 27" IPS makes sense only if you have a budget of $4000+ on your PC with a budget to replace parts worth at least $1500-2000+ annually.

You can always go for smaller monitors, or large TN panels or very good quality big TVs which cost much less than a 30 IPS or even 27" IPS.

Thanks for all the opinions. The guy wants in the $550 range for the 590 and it looks like it is pretty well the genereral opinion of everyone that the 680 is the way to go. I bought the U3011 about a year ago , mostly for photo editing purposes, so gaming is not the primary reason for having it. I do want some gaming ability, but having 60+ FPS in every game is not a big requirement. The U3011 is awesome for photo work, but for general web browsing I much prefer my old trusty 24" Soyo Topaz S with an MVA panel, contrast seems better and fonts clearer than the Dell.

Just got back from a visit to St. Louis area and a trip to Micro Center there, came home with a trunk load. An Ivy bridge 3770K and gigabyte mobo, 16GB of DDR3, Coolermaster 212 evo, Antec 300-2 case and a copy of Win 7. Now to find a GTX 680 at MSRP! In the meantime does anyone know if the HD 4000 graphics will do 2560x1600? I have searched for the info with no luck.

Saw some 680s on Amazon a few minutes ago at $519.99. They had 9 left. Gigabyte.
