Hey all,

Looking to get a high end GPU for a sub $1500 dollar build. Was recommended the 670 and 7970/50. The 7950's pair up with the 670's in price but the 670 seems to do better on avg... the 7970's are a bit more expensive, but on the lower end side they are just about on the same price level as the 670's.

I don't know which to get! hear different things from different people... which is best price/performance? Or should i look into a 7950

Plan to be using for BF3, Arma 3, Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Civ5 and other FPS or RTS games. 1920x1080p resolution. Rig most likely running a i5 3570k

*purchasing in USA*

Input appreciated!

Dunno where you are from, but in most places the 7950 with good custom coolers are significantly cheaper than even reference 670.

Latest drivers, you cant beat 7950 on the high end. If you are into overclocking, its not contest.

Performance wise, HD7970 AMD is faster in all 5 of those games compared to GTX670, especially in Arma games, Far Cry 3 and Skyrim with Mods it would be no contest.

Even with older drivers before AMD cards a huge boost:

In Arma 2, GTX670 is slower than HD7950 925mhz.
Same in Skyrim with mods.

Far Cry 3 is also going to be faster on 7970 based on preliminary benches.

Personally I think this HD7950 is the best deal for you at $285. You get free FC3 that you already plan on buying and with overclocking HD7950 is faster than HD7970 Ghz/GTX680. This also means you save $100 from HD7970 towards a future GPU upgrade. Sounds like a smart move since HD7950 OC and HD7970 OC are barely 10% apart.

If you don't want to overclock, HD7970 is about $385. Also, there is a good deal on a GTX670 for $330 if you are at all interested in BL2 and AC3 games.

I think HD7950 + OC is the best deal for you especially since AMD cards are so much faster in Arma and Skyrim and Far Cry 3 comes free already.

Why hasn't nVidia lowered the price of the 680 yet? The 7970 is faster, yet you can get it for nearly $100 less.
