So I picked up a GTX-580 SuperClocked to tide me over till the GTX-595 comes out.

The graphics performance is great @ 2560x1600 but I noticed that the card seems to run quite HOT at IDLE as well as in-game.

The idle temperature is around 60-63C and in-game (LOAD) temperatures are 80-84C.

My GTX-295 that I've had for a year-and-a-half ran at 45C idle and 69C load.

What gives?

The fan speed on the GTX-580 is at 50%. I have not changed anything in the settings so I'm not sure why it's so hot!?

This is the EVGA GTX-580 SuperClocked btw so the core clock is @ 797MHz.

Do you have any additional monitors connected?

Yes, I have a Samsung T260 connected and on while I game so that I can keep watch over temps and other info (RealTemp, EVGA Precision, Fraps).

Check your idles clocks using GPUz, I think connecting more than 1 monitor causes the card to run at a higher clock speed which is why the idle temperature is so high. I don't know about the load temperature though, might be because of the same reason.

I wouldnt worry about the load temp too much, its an overclocked card to start with so is going to run a bit hotter than normal and mid 80's load is not too bad.

Your load temperatures are normal. Temps are improved in the 580 over the 480, but it still is a hot card.

The high idle temp is normal running two monitor. Nvidia cards run at load voltage and load memory speed and half of load core speed at idle when you have two or more monitors connected that are not using an identical resolution.

Very interesting... hmm.. never thought about that..

Anyway, I increased the fan speed to 75% and the temps dropped to 43C! :D

I think even during gaming, the fan speed was hovering around 50%.

I also bought a 580 GTX Overclocked a while back. I just changed my CPU case out last night. In my old case, the card idled at 44C. During gameplay it reached temps as high as 75C before it shut off. Usually, it did not die in the games. But once I got back to Windows is when it crashed.

Now in the new case, it is idling smoothly at 33C (about 20 degrees less ferenheit). I really think it is much better in my new case. This helped me but it may not for others. I realize it is overclocked so should run hotter.

Also, I am running 64 bit Win7 on a Quad core AMD CPU with 8 GB RAM.

unless you were playing a very undemanding game with vsync on, there is no way your gtx295 only hit 69 C max.

EDIT: I am thinking of the original sandwich cards as the single pcb models were much cooler though.
