GTX 580 noise?

Has anyone had any problems with a gtx 580 being too loud? My friend just got his card and he says it's very loud, even compared to his neighbor's HD5970.

Would I be completely off if I think that should not be the case and that there might be a problem with the fan (as in it running at 100% all the time)? What could cause such a problem if that's the case?

Bad heatsink contact with the gpu and or bad airflow in his case.

thanks, don't think it's the airflow, but I'll tell him to check both options tomorrow.

Tell him to use gpu-z and monitor his cards temps.

It seems my friend hadn't looked properly for the problem. It was in fact his CPU fan that was running at 100% and making a ruckus which he fixed by switching to manual control in bios.

So no trouble with the GTX 580
