GTX 570 problem

Hey everyone, I posted this on the video cards and graphics section, but I thought I'd try here. I have a simple problem with my card. Every time I go into game or watch a video, the screen goes black and my computer shuts down or restarts. The dump files mention a TDR error or nvlddmkm.sys.

It usually takes between a few seconds and a few minutes for this to happen, but it does occur without fail. I've tested the card in other systems and the same error occurs.

the gpu temp doesn't go above 70 degrees and it seems to be dust free from what i can tell. i want to remove the shroud just in case though, but i'm not sure how to go about that

Different CPU / mobo / RAM / PSU? If so, then it's likely the card, or the drivers you're using. Have you tried fully un-installing the drivers, and installing slightly older ones? Does the behavior change?

Yep, literally swapped cards with my friend, just to check it out. His worked on my pc, mine still had errors on his pc. I used the Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all previous drivers, then installed a slightly older version. I read in the other thread that nvidia is having problems with their current drivers

Can you tell us about the other hardware you have?
Any hardware changes recently?
Since this is an older how, how long have you been having this issue?
What are your CPU temperatures like?
What program are you using to see GPU/CPU temperatures?

Specs:

AMD Phenom II x4 965
Gigabyte 790fx mobo
2x4gb ddr3 ram
Corsair 750w PSU
Windows 7 x64

No hardware or software changes recently.
Been having this issue for the past 2 weeks
CPU does not go past 60 degrees under load, GPU does not go past 70 before I get a black screen + shutdown/restart
MSI Afterburner for GPU temps, Coretemp for CPU temp

My friends computer is:

i5 2500
H61 mobo
2x2gb ddr3 ram
650w PSU
Windows 7 x64

I'm 90% sure something's wrong with the card. My 570 does not work in his system, whereas his 6950 functions fine in mine. Suspecting that the card is going bad or there is dust in important places that I should remove. I'm not sure how to go about removing the shroud and hsf though.

yeah! but do you perform a clean install??

Yes, I did perform a clean install, for both systems that I tried the card on

Can you specify what your card did on his computer? It does sound like the card, but it's good to rule things out.

In the past, when a piece of hardware isn't being obvious about causing the problem, I will grab another hard drive, install Windows and drivers (don't waste time with updates), and see if the hardware has the same behavior on the same computer.

It would do the exact same thing. After proper installation of the card and drivers, we started up a game of Counterstrike and the screen went black and his computer shut down. We used the 331.82 drivers, since the newer drivers seem to be problematic.

Definitely could be an issue with the card. Might want to go to a retailer nearby and get a good card. If that works fine, you know it's the old card.
