gtx 570 overclocking?

Hey all. I'm new to overclocking and the like. I've downloaded MSI Afterburner to be able to monitor my GPU temp etc. It seems I can run the core clock / shader etc up too. Is this recommended?

i5 730 quad core
Asus gtx570
8gb ram
corsair 650w psu

If some1 could shed some light on this for me, or possibly toss a link regarding overclocking gpu's safely (for noobs)

I play Bf3 / witcher 2 / skyrim (when released)

regular temp when gaming is 51*c
