Hey guys, I'm in the process of building a new gaming rig and have settled on the evga gtx 570 as my video card. I'm torn between 2 different models of the 570 however:

This is the 570 with 2560MBs ram

This is the 570 Classified with 1280MBs ram

I like that the Classified is already OC'd and probably can be OC'd even more (I'm thinking its a better bin if they chose to make it a Classified) but it does only have 1280MBs ram on it.

The other 570 is not OC'd but has twice the ram on it and I could OC it myself though perhaps not as much.

Which would you guys get? The Classified is about $30 cheaper but thats not really even a consideration.

What resolution are you playing at?

Also are you aware Nvidia's next gen card are reportedly coming out at the end of this month?

My resolution will likely be 1280x1024 for games.

I don't want to pay half a grand for a video card so the new card coming out doesn't interest me when this card (whichever version of it I get) will play pretty much any game I want to play.

Also, I prefer nVidia over ATI.

You do not need 2GB of memory for that resolution. Hell, at that resolution, you dont need that much card period. I'd probably get a cheap 6870, but you said you dont want a Radeon.

I hope the guy who said 4870 just made a typo....

A 570 is a LOT of GPU for 1280x1024. It's pretty much "enough" for 1900x1200 and overkill for anything lower. a 560 Ti would save like $100 and still be pretty overkill.

RAM is primarily used for framebuffer, so unless you game on very high res w/ very high res textures, the extra RAM isnt going to be very noticable.

If that's the monitor that you're going to buy, you're going to run it at the default resolution (1920x1080). I dont know what kind of monitor you have now, but flat panel LCDs really should be run at their default resolution.

At that res, either card is going to be fine. There may be a 1-3% performance difference in certain games.

What you need to worry more about is pairing it up with the rest of your rig, especially your CPU.

BTW, I game on a 20" IPS monitor @ 1680x1050 and I dont desire anything more (especially at the expense of replacing my IPS monitor). It looks fantastic and at only a few inches from my face, it's pretty close to my entire field of vision. Most of this giant monitor, high res, multi monitor stuff is either epeen releated or just plain boredom.

The rest of the rig is an ASUS p8z68-v pro/gen3 mobo, intel 2600k with a Coolermaster Haf X case. Haven't gotten ram/psu/etc yet. I was thinking 16GBs of ddr3 but I've been researching different ones because of CAS latencies.

thats too much ram for gaming. Im not saying dont buy it, but its overkill.

If you're trying to back your way into a brag thread on your rig, that's fine, but you're also wasting my time.

A 570 will match fine with a high end rig. Id probably wait for kepler at this point.

If you are gaming at 1280x1024, all you need is an HD 5770/GTX 460 1gb. Or Llano GPU lol

lol I'm hardly bragging on a mostly unfinished setup. I like to have "room to grow" if possible, its why I got the 2600k instead of the 2500k. I've been dabbling in some video processing and found the 2600k would be better for that. Also, the extra ram may not be needed for gaming but for gaming and video processing ...

So no, no bragging as its a barely started project. I am trying to get quality pieces however.

Every game currently on the market right now (that I know of) is 32 bit, meaning it can only access 4GB max of system + video combined memory). Many are not LBA aware, which means only 2GB max. 16 GB is a LOT of room to grow. Realistically, 8GB will be PLENTY for a gaming machine for quite a while given games have to be natively 64 bit to be able to use more than 4. 16 GB is beyond overkill unless you do something else with the machine that requires obscene amounts of memory or manage to play multiple games at the same time.

Um, how about the GTX 480 for $210 @ NewEgg? EVGA and all that, 1536MB of ram should be good for quite some time.

Later models are supposed to be quieter, etc.

Put the rest of that money towards a nice monitor ;)
