hello

I was planning on buying either a GTX 460 ($225) or HD6850 ($267), but I can't manage right now. I've narrowed my search down to 2 other options. Please, note that I won't be buying online, I live in Beirut, Lebanon.

my options are:
  1. EVGA GeForce GTX 550 1gb [01G-P3-1556-KR] for $182
  2. XFX Radeon HD6770 1gb for $182
I have a 19" Viewsonic screen with a 1440x900 resolution. I reckon it's a pretty low resolution, so should I be able to play modern games with some eye candy with either of these cards? Which one should I go for?

my specs are:
  • Intel i3-540 @ 3.4GHz
  • MSI H55-GD65
  • 4GB DDR3-1333
  • Gecube Radeon 3870 512mb gddr4 (RIP)
  • 500gb / 160gb hdds
  • InWin 450W (30a on 12v)
appreciate the help.

I've had a geforce gtx 550 and a radeon 5770 which is the 6770. the geforce gtx 550 was faster with 3dmark benchmarks but with games the 5770 was faster. if the games you are going to be playing are in dx11 with tessellation ie hawk 2 then the geforce gtx 550 is the one to get

either card will do very well at that res. I would just go with the 6770 as its only about 10-15% slower but uses about 30-40 watts less.

well you can just google "gtx550 reviews" and see how it performs. the 6770 is just a rebadged 5770 so you can look at reviews of either.

I'm gonna go for the gtx 550, mainly cuz that model comes with a 3 year warranty.

thanks for the help, appreciate it.

The 550 is slightly faster (definitely not 10-15%, more like 5%) so go with that, unless you can still find hd 5770s, which I would figure to be cheaper - the 6770 and 5770 are the same gpus.

edit: I second the gtx 460 768mb

here in the techpowerup review, a slightly oced gtx550 ti is exactly 15 % faster than a 5770 at 1280x1024 which is the same as testing at 1440x900. so yeah at stock it would be about 5-10% difference. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GTX_550_Ti_Direct_Cu/23.html

The gtx 460 768mb is out of stock here - probably cuz they only imported only a handful of everything [bastards].
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions guys.
