GTX 480 Heat Inquiry

I know that the 480's run hot but I was wondering with anyone out there that has one does the 480 heat up the rest of your system quite a bit. Specifically the CPU temps. Just trying to get a feel of how one affects overall system temperatures.

I appreciate any input you guys have.

They exhaust air outside of the case, so I doubt system temps would increase too much. Probably a little, but not too much.

I figured as much just didn't know if the head coming off the card was enough to effect any other components temperatures.

You can probably bake a Thanksgiving turkey after installing a 480 😀.

It'd be pretty dumb of Nvidia to dump all that heat inside the case 😛.

Yeah that it would be. I know with my gtx 285 there is heat I can feel radiating off the back of the card closest to the CPU. Now while it is not the same quantity that is pumped out through the back of the case. I wondered if that has been multiplied with gtx 480 in a way that would cause concern to other system components.

Yes some heat is dumped in the case. I'd say the reference cooler is about 90% effective at rejecting heat to the OUTSIDE of the case. The 58xx series cooler is better; easily in the upper 90% range.

So called "enthusiast" models with a large rotary fan or fans are the worst offenders. A pair of those in SLI turns any case into a sauna unless you have some serious airflow which would probably mask the noise of the coolers when the shaders are going full tilt.

They may dump a bit more heat into the case than most dual slot cards of that power draw, due to the exposed heatpipes and grill. I remember someone posted a few weeks ago how having a fan blowing on the exposed bits of heatpipe helped a lot, so they may be dumping a good bit there
