After troubleshooting my PC constantly freezing, I finally determined the cause: my GTX is overheating and crashing while in 2D.
Has anyone else had this problem? What's a good way to cool the GTX 480 that doesn't include fitting my rig with a toilet and 2 sinks (i.e. water cooling)?
Conclusion drawn from:
1) Computer NEVER freezes while playing a 3D game, but tends to freeze constantly in 2D
2) GPU temps steadily rise and hold around 75C-85C while in 2D (CPUID-HWM)
3) When it freezes, it will constantly freeze when I reboot unless I let the computer "rest"
4) I DL'ed EVGA precision, cranked up default fan speed, crashing stopped.
I'm running two monitors and that seems to drive the temps up while idle. Increasing the fan speed to 60% instead of 50% solves the problem (idle temps drop and hold around 65C).
I could use a better way to cool this thing...
