GTX 470 vs. HD 5850

I am going to be building out a new system with the following key components:

  • Asus M4A89GTD Pro
  • AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE
  • 2 x 2 GB DDR 3 1333 Mushkin Memory

I am torn between the 5850 and the GTX 470 though. On its own I would be inclined to purchase the GTX 470. However, since the 890 GX chipset doesn't support SLI - I am concerned about limiting my ability to upgrade and easily add a second card in the future.

On the other hand, by the time games reach a point where I need a second card to have them run well at pretty high settings, wouldn't I be able to purchase a much better single card than a second GTX 470 for around that price?

Other thoughts would be appreciated.

You've pretty much hit the nail on the head. Very few people ever go SLI/CF years down the road - they either do it right away or after a few months. If you aren't planning on going SLI/CF soon, then I wouldn't worry about it.

what resolution are your screen?

SLI/CF is not so much an upgrade path as it is the option to use two videocards to run demanding games at a high resolution.

5850 will smash that resolution. Not a fan of Fermi either 😛. There are single GPU's fast enough to run games. CF/SLI is much more of a luxury than a necessity
