As the thread title suggests i currently own a asus gtx 470.It is running the games fine but i would really appreciate a quieter card. So is it fine to upgrade to gtx 580 or should i wait for kepler? My psu is corsair TX 750.So if i upgrade do i have to upgrade the psu too? Thanks for your time and happy new year to every one :D

your psu can easily handle the upgrade even with high overclocking on both the i7 and 580. and I would certainly oc the i7 to get the very most out of that 580 if you decide to get it. only you can decide if spending 500 bucks is worth it or not.

I am thinking about that actually.I initially thought to upgrade to gtx 570 but i do not think it will be much of a upgrade.I know gtx 570 is faster, quieter but i am leaning towards gtx 580 for its performance.Overclocking the i7 is out of question because the workstation motherboard does not support it.Well i may jump on the Sandy Bridge as well and upgrade the gfx card later.I am really a little bit confused. So many options.Anyways thanks for your help

I would get the 580 and hold off on Sandy Bridge because the cpu that you have now is fine. look at the high end Sandy Bridge towards the end of the year or Ivy Bridge for a decent cpu upgrade.

I have a 470 and was thinking the same thing. But then I thought theres nothing holding me back performance-wise (dont play Crysis, Metro2033). And if I go for a 580 it would probably be more for the excitement of a new card than an actual need (fan dont bother me). And if I did get the 580, in a few more months time, there will be the 680 and 670. Its a never ending cycle which I think I will step out of momentarily lol. May hop back on if I find a game that matters to me and which can actually hobble my card.

Can you SLI ?? if yes then wait for the GTX560 (rumors say it will be released end of January).

Dual GTX560 will be ~the price of a single GTX580 but much faster.

One more option will be the GTX590 or whatever they will call it (Single card Dual Chips).

If you only want single card configuration then go GTX570 and OC to get near GTX580 performance. ;)

I can do SLI but then the case will be a turbine i suspect
I need a quieter and a good performing card.I could buy the gtx 570 and oc it but then again good oc seems like a hit and miss to me.I mostly play rpgs and occasionally tps and action adventures. The choice is really a difficult one :hmm:

I'd ditch the 470 and down/side grade to a gtx 460. oc the 460 to ~ 800 core (~99% probability with afterburner) and you'll have gtx 470 performance but with one of the quietest cards around. also, you should be able to swing a trade with somebody or just sell the 470 and buy a new 460 in a revenue neutral or even slightly positive transaction.

I'd wait and see how the next cards play out. That's what I am doing. I almost bought a 580 yesterday, but I decided to wait and see because like you I am happy with the performance of my current card. Not to mention, no must have games that I cannot play ATM.

I think i should probably wait for upcoming gtx 560.If the gtx 560 runs cooler and quieter i will probably buy a pair and go with the sli route.

Personally I'm not a fan of buying 2 new video cards to run SLI/Crossfire. That doesn't allow for future upgrades. For example I just got a eVGA SC GTX570 which outperforms a standard GTX480 90% of the time using less power and less noise, and then I will buy another to run SLI for a lot less $$ next holiday as a great upgrade.
