my resolution will not be changing over the next few generations, so that was why I was gonna go with the 768mb

I'm gaming at 1680x1050 and was kind of thinking along the same lines. Thinking of grabbing this MSI from Newegg - free shipping today:

It would be replacing an OC'd GTX 260 so I don't think I would see a massive increase in performance, but it would fit better in my small Lian Li minitower (and put out less heat).
 
The MSI card looks good. It has voltage control and was able to get up to 927 mhz on the GPU at Guru 3D. Plus it comes with Just Cause 2 for free.
 
That GTX 260 is only a few months old and has an Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme GTX Pro on it. Should be able to get enough for it to defray the cost of the GTX 460 quite a bit.
