Hi all,

I am getting my GTX 295 later today!!! :D :D

Anyway, what PPD could I expect on Seti or GPUGRID? Can I run these on the GPU and other tasks like Aqua on the CPU - completely seperate?

Which is the better DC project to run - stability, ease of use, ppd?

Any help will be appreciated.

you'll get more PPD running gpugrid and it'll use less cpu %
you can get an idea of the exact PPD by looking around the host lists on their websites
Both seti and gpugrid are perfectly stable for me.
No issues with running other cpu projects.

GPUGRID is very easy to set up and run...and in my experience consumes anywhere from 9% to 14% of a CPU's cycles; if you're running a dual or quad core CPU you can run instances of BOINC on the remaining cores. For me, GPUGRID runs 24/7 with no intervention or babysitting needed. Not sure of the PPD, but you'll contribute a lot to the research with that card.

FYI the performance of the GPU is proportional to the CPU that feeds it...I have four rigs running GPUGRID , 2 with 8800GTs and 2 with GTX260s...and the better the CPU,the higher the production of the GPU -see below:

Thanks guys. As I read this, the 295 is sitting in from on me.... Will only have the time to install tomorrow morning, but I can drool in the mean time.

Just one question, what do you mean by instances of BOINC running? I only have one that uses both cores of my AMD X2.

By an instance of BOINC, i mean a task per core...how many cores of the CPU you allocate to BOINC.

Where do I set that? The only place I have seen in on the varoious web sites under the preferences.

Another question. I have now installed the card - what a heavy weight monster. But installation (HW and SW) went well. I now have one WU of GPUGRID running and one of AQUA. If I pause and then resume AQUA, I get two WU's running. Does this sound right? The status of the GPUGRID (In BOINC / Tasks) says Running (0.22 CPUs, 1 CUDA).

Any help or comments please?

To set the processor usage , open the boinc program, click the advanced tab up top, then preferences, then processor usage an dlook at the bottom of the box, you'll see options for the % of total cores to allocate.

You should be able to run two simutaneous WU of GPUGRID, one per GPU (the 295 has 2 GPUs, right?). A visit to the GPUGRID forums may help...

good luck.

Yes, 295 has 2 GPU's.

Just 'switched off' SLI and the second GPUGRID WU started working. But the progress is still VERY slow. Been working all day and only progressed 0:44:00 - 36%

I checked the settings as above - all set correctly. Going to install 6.6.17 and see what happens.

Thanks for help so far!!!

a lot of the WUs are 10-12 hours , some longer. The 0:44:00 you refer to is likely the CPU time...check the time to completion column fo ra better estimate.

Installed 6.6.7 and all seems to have settled. The 0:44:00 jumped up to 5 hours or so. Looks like the 2 WU's will finish in the 11 - 12 hour time frame. So far so good. Just lookng forward to seeing what points I get.

What happens now with SLI off? In games?

Thanks again.

wow, you can run seti on a gpu now?

edit: um, yeah...I've been, uh, working a lot lately...damn recession...taking me away from cool things like seti.

ok guys, so I don't have to do ANYTHING AT ALL to enable my gtx 260??? no cool downloads from some monty python-esque websites with secret passwords like "bacon"???? I followed the very simple instructions and it just seems way too easy.

I am getting about 2800 points per completed WU. So, about 9 - 11 hours per WU, 2 at a time, I am getting around 12 - 16k per day. Quite impressive. the graphs in BOINC are going one way - straight up!!!

that's interesting, I'd think that you would get more credit than that.

My q9450 (at stock right now) is getting 1250 credit for an astropulse WU. Average is around 13 hrs, so, um... a little over 9000 ppd, or 2250 per cpu core if that trend holds for the long run.

edit: of course, I just re-read your post and saw that you were only using 2 cores instead of 4. 6-8k per core is VERY impressive.

I am running an oldish AMD X2 and still getting about 600ppd with AQUA on the CPU's (2 cores). I will have done spot on 100k points in GPUGRID in this last week since installation of the 295.

I am quite happy!!!
