Ok so basically I was wondering how long the GTX 280 will allow me to play games at high settings at the 1680x1050 resolution. Will it last me until direct x 11 cards?

nobody here will be able to tell you anything..except for a guess.

it looks like you've already purchased it so theres nothing anyone in here says that matters... just use it for as long as you can until it can't keep up anymore.

The gtx2800 still is monster card, second to 285 in mono-GPU... don't worry and have fun.
When you buy a game and see that your frame rate is too low at your resolution then it's time to look another card (assuming yo turn off some eye-candy)

assuming that the 8800 GT cards are still chugging away in most ppl's systems then the 280 will be going as long as it... hopefully. it may even last till nvidia moves up to gddr5 or higher

My 8800GTX is still running nicely -- have yet to see any need to upgrade even at my 1920x1200 res. Best investment I ever made. I can't imagine the 280GTX!

This.

If you are looking to stay on the cutting edge...maybe 6 months to a year. If you bought it to last until it dies, it'll last a while. The X800 that I put in my parents PC 5 years ago is still chugging along.

I can't see you needing anything faster for that resolution. The exception being Crysis, and nobody actually plays that they just use it as a benchmark :p
You should be good for a year or two yet. I am still content with my 8800GTS512, although faster is always better :)
