GTX 260 to GTX 470 question

What games, what resolution(s)? What is the rest of your system specs?
yeah no kidding.

OP when asking a question like this it would help if actually provided info since you have no sig.

my experience with going from a gtx260 to a gtx470 was a mixed bag with my setup. most games certainly improved but some only did by a little and in a few cases not at all. heck BC 2 was slower in DX11 on the gtx470 than it was in DX10 on the gtx460. that was mainly cpu related though and running in DX10 gave the same results I was already getting with the gtx260.

in the end I sent it back because it was just way too loud and hot compared to my gtx260. it was also extremely power hungry with any decent overclock on it. I know they are much cheaper now then when tried it out but I still have no interest in ever using one again.

im in a similar position... looking to upgrade.

I play WOW, which thus far seems to play better on Nvidia cardswith Dx11.
Currently running a slightly OC'd Q9550 with 8GB ram and GTX 260c216 on a high end asus board.

Upgrade to gtx 470 for $229(AR) or gtx 570 for $349.

470 probably wouldn't be enough of an upgrade for you, I'd go with 570.

your signature is a clear example of mission creep.

slick2004 ,
I was pondering the same thing as you when the 400 cards were leased. After doing some reading I decided the cost and benefit was not worth it to touch those cards.

Now with the 500 out that is a different story now. Add to that AMD has dropped a new card and this time of the year. With patience you can snag a good card at a great price if you search hard enough.

I'm in same boat as OP but definitely not looking at the 470 anymore if I ever was given the heat/noise/size complaints. I'd love something the size of a 460 with the performance of a (theoretical, atm) 560 for around $250. Q1 '11 is when I'm looking to upgrade as I don't require the fps juice currently. Still on my 22" 1680x1050 so almost everything is still possible to max out on my 260. Notable exceptions, Crysis (duh), Stalker, Metro 2033. Just Cause 2 surprisingly playable at essentially max settings (incl 16xCSAA) and damn beautiful. GTA5 should take some notes from those guys.

I did a similar upgrade from a GTX 260 216 to a GTX 460 OC FTW (similar performance to 470). Didn't really feel like it was enough of an upgrade, but for the $200 I spent there really wasnt anything better at the time. You should maybe wait for the 560 to come out, as the x60 versions usually shake things up price wise.
