I live close to Edinburgh, Scotland, UK and I am really confused to why the GTX 1080 costs £650+ here ($950) but in the US the GTX 1080 is around $600. Does anyone know the reason behind this?

Ah I see. In the UK all prices include VAT whereas US mustn't include VAT on display prices hence my confusion?

Thanks for explaining that

There's also a lot of price gouging that goes on in the UK with products of limited supply because there's a decent number of people who will pay in the order of £100 markup prices just to have the cards a few weeks earlier than other people. And retails will typically exploit this fact.

There's also import tax on goods coming into the country, as well as international shipping and then VAT on top of that.

Give it 2 months when stock is back up the gouging stops and then when they launch the non-founder variants, they will be significantly cheaper, I'm hoping £500 or a bit under.

United States doesn't have VAT

Individual States can set sales taxes. Some have none at all, and often if the online retailer does not have facilities in your state, you will not be charged sales tax.

Its also a cultural thing. No merchants that I know of lists after tax prices in the United States outside of gas stations at the pump, and that might be due to legal mandates.

I wouldn't say its cultural. It's primarily because tax rates differ between States, and dont apply to everything. E.g. clothing and food is not taxed in many/most states with sales tax. Plus there are even 4 states with no sales tax at all.

Just as an example, Amazon shows $49.00 tax on a $699 video card for me here in North Carolina.

So about 7% sales tax.
