I work in an architecture office and we are looking to upgrade two of our workstations to make use of the gpu rendering capabilities. I checked the wattage of the power supply which was 685W which was more than enough for the card... I did not however look at the power output options. From the power supply I have a "Power_VGA2" 8 pin female receptacle. Currently the cable plugged into it goes nowhere as the Nvidia Quadro k2000 did not require separate power, that cable is a male 8 pin connector on one end which branches off into two 6 pin connectors.

When talking to a local computer shop they warned against using a PCI express 6 to 8 adapter as it may not provide enough power? They also cautioned me as to finding out the specific information as to the 8 pin output on the power supply as they are all not the same and can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer?

With 75 watts from the slot and 150 watts from the 8 pin connector, I would think you are good to go to use two 6 to 8 pin adapters?

The card is 180 watts and you seem to have 225 watts available for it?

Manual indicates that it can use up to a 300 watt video card.

I am planning on using the PCI express 6 to 8 pin adapter. We talked to our IT guy and he thought it was the best option to try as well. He thought if it was not providing enough power it would not run, and there should me minimal chance of causing damage to the card. Thanks for the response, I will update once we receive the adapters from amazon.

iirc the 2 extra pins on an 8 pin pcie power cable don't actually carry current, one is ground and the other is 'sense,' which is just another ground.
