Once I get my refund back from eBay, I might get either the GTX 1060 6gb MSI ovc1 for $259 or the RX 580 dual fan of for $245. Which one would be best? I know that the 580 is $15 cheaper, but the 1060 has two more GB. I also heard from a guy that has the 1060, stating that the drivers aren't as good as the AMD.

If you are considering the 4GB version of the RX580, go with the GTX 1060 6GB instead. The 8GB RX 580 and the 6GB GTX 1060 the performance is a tossup, depending on the game.

I've never had any issues with the drivers for my GTX 1060, and from what I have read from owners of the RX 580 here, AMD has really improved the drivers over the last year. At this point in the product's life, both sets of drivers will be good and stable.

I didn't consider the 8GB RX 580, because they were going for around $269+

That's only like $25 more than the 4GB price you listed. If it's a card you plan on keeping for a few years, pay the difference or buy the GTX 1060 6GB.

Actually other places were selling the 4gb 580 for $269+ and the 8gb was around $300+

I'd go for the 1060 6GB because of the additional ram. Otherwise they trade blows depending on the game.

Rx 580 8gb is the card that will last the longest. 4gb is only ok now for sub $200 cards.

Not sure you can say unequivocally the 8gb 580 will last longer. Nobody really knows, after all these are midrange cards at best, and personally, I think by the time 6gb is not enough vram both cards will be marginal. I would definitely go with 8 gb on a higher end card, and 4 gb is not enough, but 6 gb vs 8 gb on a midrange card IMO is a non-issue.

Buy what you want. Both cards are full DX12 ready, will last one more Generation.

In your place i would get the 1060 because the 2GB extra Vram makes it more future-proof.

If noise matters to you:

I don't know about the 580, but I have a 1060 3GB in my PC at work and it's dead silent for desktop use including Chrome video playback. This is a prebuilt Acer PC so it's a generic 1060 not one with a custom cooler.

I would get the cheaper of the two
  • 580 8g
  • 1060 6g

Or I would get the 580 4g I would not get the 1060 3g.

What scenario demands 6GB of VRAM?
I don't get all these recommendations to avoid 4GB.

I have both, the RX 580 8GB has become my preference because it performs well in most games I play, the 1060 is good too but NVidia drivers as of late has been up and down with some games.

If you're only restricting to RX 580 4GB then go for the 1060 6GB.

I would get the 1060 6GB over the 580 4GB.

Both GPU's perform the same. You just want the better cooler and more VRAM at this point. They both overclock quite well.

Every game newer than 2015 I play uses about 4GB+. What games do you play that don't use a lot of VRAM? I can think of a lot of VRAM light games that are pretty recent, but 4GB is cutting it close, especially with the speed of the these GPU's.

I see RX 580/GTX 1060 as 1080p120hz or even 1440p60hz capable GPU's which can use a lot of VRAM.

With cards this close in price and performance, the most important question is what are your PC's specifications (including the monitor), and what games do you play or plan on playing?

In a vacuum, I'd go for the 1060 6GB over a 4GB 580. More VRAM, less power draw, and potentially quieter and cooler running, at least going by TDP and reviews. Drivers and other issues may favor AMD - I haven't kept up on what others have said about AMD vs Nvidia in that regard myself lately, though I haven't had issues with either company's drivers (at least not recently) - but I don't think that should be the major factor determining factor here.

If you look at it as $15 for an extra 2GB of VRAM (whether you need to use it now or not, it is extra headroom for the future) and greater efficiency, it's an easy decision. It would be a more difficult choice if we were talking about a less expensive 8GB 580, but alas, mining and memory pricing has pushed it up out of the discussion for this price-point.

I got an Acer xf240h, i5440, and 8GB ram. Maybe I should save up for a 8GB RX 580, so I can use the free sync.

I'd definitely lean in that direction given that's a 144Hz FreeSync monitor. That's a big enough reason for me to change my recommendation from Nvidia to AMD in this case. For 1080p you'd probably be okay even with the 4GB model, but if you can get the 8GB version it's preferable.

Yeah I was thinking if price matters, just go for the 4gb RX 580, since I'm only playing in 1080p.

Get a bit more money and grab a RX580 8GB. You will not be regretful about this. 4GB isn't future proof to recomend the cheapest version.

SInce you have a freesync monitor, I would drop my 2 cents in favor of spending some more money on 8GB RX 580. If you cant, go with 4GB RX 580 over 1060 6GB just because of freesync. I have a 1060 6GB myself and I constantly see VRAM usage above 4GB in even GTA V. Games are using more than 4GB to cache the hi res textures and such, BUT, you will make up for that with freesync.
