Driving the car last Thursday, doing about 45-50, no drama. Then all of sudden flashing symbols on the lcd, CEL lights up and the display flashes up "Reduced Performance Mode". Car immediately has no power and starts slowing down. "WTF", sais I, this is going to be bad. I start looking for a place to pull over and realize the motor is running fine, no knocking, catastrophic failure sounds, engine temps are fine. Car just has no power, have to put my foot on the floor to get it to move. Decided to limp it home if I could make it and I did.

Pulled the code and its a throttle position sensor code. The two sensors in the throttle body are not reading correctly at the ECU. Diagnostics call for checking the wiring for shorts and making sure all connections are tight. If all checks out, replace throttle body. GM only part and goes for $450, ouch!

Oh well. Car has been very reliable up till now. Worst problem it had previous was a stuck parking brake cable so I guess it was due.

I'm not sure if you'd need a tune for it or not, but it looks like BBK throttle bodies are a touch over $300.

BBK's all appear to cable driven throttle bodies. I'd need all the bits off an 04 GTO to put one in plus a tune.

That Amazon one looks like a match. Not sure how it's $100 cheaper than the lowest dealer price I could find. Wondering if it's refurbished somehow?

Edit: looks like standard motor product makes generic 3rd party replacement parts. Do I take a chance and potentially flush $350 or just go for the AD Delco one one for $450...hmmm decisions decisions.

Dealer parts are always going to be more expensive. I usually find off-brand parts for half the price on Amazon or Ebay. Has always worked for me (clutch cylinders, O2 sensor, so far).

This is probably one of the most common problems people have even when they were new. I remember reading countless posts on the forum about this. The GTO had some really odd electrical gremlins.

There's a problem with the BCM wires rubbing against metal exposing wires and causing all sorts of weird things to happen. This is one of the most common that I know of.

Yep, I read about these too.

I love the GTO, just an amazing car, but it scares me.

Yeah I found the thread about that and checked mine and sure enough it had rubbed through the insulation. I insulated it with a piece of electrical tape as a temporary fix and then cleared the CEL, but the next time I drove it the code came up again exactly the same. Does this mean it fried my BCM or is it still a chance that the problem is with the throttle body? I guess at this juncture the only way to know is to swap in the less expensive part, the throttle body.

I did find the AC Delco TB on RockAuto. Don't know how I missed it before. It's a good $60 cheaper from them and only 30 more than the SMP one one which they also sell. I also had a discount code for Rock so I bought it there. We'll see if that does the trick.

Quit whining and take the free excuse to upgrade.

Hehe. There are some nice 102mm TB's out there for around $600-700 but then I would need a 102mm intake manifold which goes for another $800 or so. From what I've read the stock 90mm flows more than enough air for bolt on mods. Would really need to upgrade the cam to get any value out of the 102mm upgrade.

Of course if the wife wasn't looking maybe I could sneak a magnuson on there. I can just hear her now, "Why does the car sound funny?"

It seems I have lucked out. $390 throttle body came today. Swapped it in and took it for a test drive. So far no CEL. I'll have to buy some hose to permanently insulate the BCM wiring harness though.

Next code will be P9999 insufficient manifold pressure and P9998 no2 solenoid flow below threshold.

Come on now, little more optimism.

Guys is at least doing research and getting his hands dirty.....vs walking into a dealership bent over backwards.

The best one I had was when my tach went to redline, and my speedometer was stuck at 0mph. Also had the issues with the door locks and the car not being able to synch them up with each other. The passenger side lock actually went out twice on me. When that happened, it was near impossible to lock the doors without setting off the alarm.

I will say that it was one of my favorite cars and did really well on road trips from a comfort perspective. I was hoping the Camaro would build on the car, but it was a side-grade in many ways.
