GTAIII and WinXp problem

I'm sorry if this has been posted many times before but, I just installed WinXp Home yesterday and shortly after GTAIII and for some reason, all I get in the menu are blocks and not a the words. I downloaded and installed the patch but that didn't work either. I have gone through most of the game but that was when I was playing through WinMe. I reformatted the hard drive and did a clean install of XP but saved the game files on my home network but I can't seem to be able to play GTAIII anymore. Can anyone help?
 
Thank you for the help except that now the game doesn't even run. I double click on the icon and nothing happens, i click on it in the start menu nothing happens, I restarted my computer and still nothing happend. This patch was supposed to help me play the game right? Is their another patch or something that can help me?
 
When you do get it working, turn off trails in the games display menu also. (if you are using a nvidia/geforce card)
