i got this game during the summer sale and put in about 10hrs so far. this is my first GTA game and i don't really see why this game or the recent GTA titles are so good? everything i've done so far is just repetition of what i did before... do some work for someone, kill some guys, eventually kill the guy you were working for, and then do the same thing all over again... where's the fun in that? does the story turn out much different if i didn't kill the first couple guys i was working for?

and how come the cop cars on the streets don't care if i run a red light or drive too fast? not what i expected!

the only thing i found cool was that it does in fact feel like i'm traveling through a real city but that novelty wears off eventually.

oh and i still haven't figured out how to play "multiplayer". i can't find where in the menu takes me to multiplayer, and yes i signed in to social club...

and what's up with the no AA option? i guess this was done for performance reasons?

oh and i also bought red faction guerrilla during the sale and guess what? it seems to play like a GTA type game set in mars! ARGGGH

I hear you, you can play MP from the phone's menu. I haven't actually found any games yet though.

Grand Theft Auto games have always been about the freedom to do what you want when you want. Also you can choose how to complete objectives the way you want. Need to kill someone driving away in a car??? Rocket launcher, make them crash until their car explodes, drive them off a cliff, etc.....it's just about freedom.

Agreed on all counts, also the cars handling physics are more "sim-like" in GTAIV when compared to previous games in the series. They feel heavy and they "push" through sharp turns. This is sorta cool for awhile but it grows tiresome until basically the only fun road vehicles are the motorcycles. Major bummer.

Also agreed on Red Faction, seems like a GTA clone set on a red planet (everything's red! always!) where the only saving grace is the destructible environment.

With all that said, I bought Just Cause 2 over the most recent Steam sale and, guess what, it's a GTA clone through-and-through set in a fictional southeast asian country. Except this game is actually quite good, it does "GTA" better than GTAIV did. The storyline and character acting is, by design, absolutely over-the-top awful. That part I'm not a fan of, but at least it's not forced down your throat too much after you get access to the open, free-roaming world. But the rest of it is great, the vehicles feel very "arcade-y" and I mean that in a good way, there's lots of fun to be had messing with civilians including using the grappling hook in fiendishly clever ways. Physics fun galore, though no destrucible buildings. And the parachute, it's pretty awesome!

Anyway, just mentioning Just Cause 2 in case anyone else misses the inane fun of the GTA's prior to when the series "got all grown up" in IV.

I am really hoping we see the same improvements with the next installment of GTA that we saw from GTA3 to Vice City. Not only did VC look a little better than GTA3, but it also had better performance, even on the same hardware. VC also had a brighter, more vibrant environment, and if we see the same with the next installment along with better performance (and capability of AA), we could be looking at a great game. I'd also like to see motorcycle and helicopter controls and physics that are more like GTA VC than GTA IV.

did you play lost and the damned and the ballad of gay tony? they did a lot to bring the fun back

the ballad of gay tony is better, but lost and the damned is good as well

what you just described is basically true for EVERY game...what did you expect?

games have gameplay

that gameplay is generally repetitious

that is the CORE of game design to make something that is supposed to be fun to do over and over again

what games do you consider to be good?

I believe in the mafia games they get mad if you run red lights etc

I haven't, and I'll most likely pick those up on the cheap. (Un)fortunately, L4D2 has been taking up all my gaming time. I've also been looking forward to Mafia II which is due out in late Aug.

I really liked the physics and handling on gta4

it took me a while to get used to it, but its way more satisfying to pull off crazy stunts or dangerous corners etc

I agree, too, with the exception of the bikes and choppers. I loved the PCJ 600 in VC, and I miss it.

God no. The gritty environments of GTA III and IV are just fucking amazing.

Oh, I don't disagree, it's all about the environment. And that's certainly what worked for GTA3 and IV. I remember some people on the GTA boards saying they hoped the next installment is not based on Miami, but I think they are overlooking what a good-looking game that could be with their new engine in a more colorful and vibrant setting.

Loved the setting and physics of GTA IV, but Vice City was much better in terms of gameplay and open-endedness.

I mean, WTF, no more tanks?!?

Some people just don't like GTA games. I find them great.

GTAIV is serious though. It's not like the other GTA games where you run around in a tank blowing people up and not caring about the story. In 4 the story is very well done.

If you want a game where you just run around in tanks blowing stuff up then get Just Cause 2. It is almost the perfection of sandbox games where you just want to have fun. The story is forgettable and it gets boring after a few hours, but it's good for blowing off steam.

I also bought and finished Red Faction: Guerrilla. It's not as serious as GTA4 but not as silly as JC2. I liked it, and the destructible environments made it different enough from GTA to be it's own game.

The main problem with JC2 and RF:G is the difficulty scaling. Towards the end of the games you are basically superman. They counter this by just spawning 100 of the hardest enemies any time you look at a guy wrong.

As for Far Cry 2, 99% of people hate it. If you hate GTAIV you will certianly hate it.

Next GTA better have a tank, if its bright and set in the 80s again then thats a bonus for me as im all about the 80s.

GTA IV was awesome. I also played through both the Episodes from Liberty City.

The game had some of the most hillarious characters I've ever encountered in a video game. Much of the dialogue is simply comedy gold.

I loved how unpredictable the game was. One minute you're driving your hot date McDonalds in your stolen car, the next you're wanted for murder and chased around the city by five cop cars.

I found Saints Row 2 a much more fun experience this generation of games. It doesn't take itself so seriously like GTA4 does.

And we have the contrast where GTA IV has great driving, physics, and story, while SR2 lacks that and makes up for it in the "zany" department. Whilst the same genre of game, they are completely separate.

You should pick up GTA: Episodes from Liberty City. It has The Lost and the Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony. The Lost and the Damned has a really good storyline and is a lot of fun to play. The Ballad of Gay Tony adds a lot of things that the game was missing, but the storyline is very shallow, and it seems to just end when it could have easily kept going. The Ballad of Gay Tony is much more fun to play online because of the things that it adds to the game, however.

I just hope that GTA V or whatever they're calling it is more like San Andreas. That game had it all. There were so many things you could do other than missions. So many races, mini games, planes, etc. All GTA IV had was friends, and that got lame quick. The map in San Andreas was also much larger than GTA IV's map. It would be great to see a game of San Andreas' epicness on the GTA IV engine.

Well, if they are consistent in regards to what they have done in the past, we'll most likely see a Vice City-like installment next, then something like SA.

GTA 3 - Liberty City
GTA 3 - Vice City
GTA 3 - San Andreas
GTA 4 - Liberty City
??

IMO, GTA V (or whatever) should include all of the cities that have been visited since GTA 3. They always mention the other cities in each game, but you never get to travel to them (well, for one mission you go to Vice City in GTA 3). You also see the guy from GTA 3 in Vice City when you do the racing missions. I realize that you wouldn't see all of the characters because the games are set in different time periods, but it would be completely awesome to have one game that tied all of the cities together.
