GTA4: Anyone else having trouble blocking punches?

when fighting, the A button is useless. It should help me block or avoid a punch, but my character just stands there. Am I misiing something?

don't you have to hold the button down and wait for your character to put his hands up to block?

that's what i think from the limited amount of time i played the game.
 
screw blocking. Take out gun and pop the guy.

I never notice it. rarely do I need to block. But then again I'm fighting pedestrians or guys who start stuff with me after I car jack them. The nerve those guys have.

I'll try it out later and see if I can sucessfully block. I know I seen times where niko puts his arms up to block.
